Three men checked into a hotel room for which they paid $30. The next day, the manager realized that the men had been overcharged. She gave the bellhop $5 to return to the three men. On the way to their room the bellhop decided to keep $2 for himself, and give each of the three men one dollar. The three men had now paid $9 each, or a total of $27. This plus the $2 the bellhop kept makes a total of $29.

What happened to the other dollar?

The answer is that not each of the men had paid an equal amount after the $5 was taken off. With the price at $30, the split would have been 10, 10, 10. But at $25 ($30-$5) the bellhop would have to have only given $2 back to make it so that the men paid $9 each. So the bellhop shoulda kept $3 if he wanted it to be even for the men. ($25 is not evenly divisible by 3, and neither is $28 (with the $3 given back))
