Two options I figure.

One is go in, tell them the email system didn't forward the notices, here's the books, and they can forget the fees.

Two is go in, stash the books back in the stacks where they belong, then email them after and say I already returned the books, and that they need to find them.

I find there to be nothing objectionable about my choices there - that their email system failed to forward properly is not my fault. I suspect that the library will be as inflexible as everything else about that school, and thus, I consider the second option.

I've actually seen the server room. It's half a dozen racks lined up next to each other. The only display in the room is a CRT that is at least as old as me. And the racks are about 80% empty.

I've seen a couple people wandering in there occasionally. They inspire less confidence than would a teenager who screws around online on weekends.

The other thing they might say is that they are not responsible for the email system, or that I should've been checking my school email, or that the notices are not necessary but only out of politeness.

I don't know how much power they have to enforce their fees. Can they disable my library borrower privilege? Fine, go ahead, I don't care all that much. Can they put a financial fee and/or hold on my account? That's a problem.
