Luckily he had a part time receptionist that picked up the slack.

Receptionist was a college student who worked 3 days/week.
Office mgr did receptionist duties the other 2 days.

She went on maternity leave at the beginning of summer.
And even more luckily, since it's summer and no classes, the receptionist came to work full time.

She ended maternity leave and came back to work, which was perfect timing because the receptionist went back to school and is now 3 days/week again.
(Probably planned this way.)

Oh, after she was hired, she still never told the owner she was preggers till she needed to leave.
(She's a big woman.)

But what do you think about her not telling the owner she was preggers?

She did it correctly. People doing hiring can not legally ask and it is bad judgement to just blab it during an interview. Same story for any protected class. Don't ask and don't tell about family, religion, health, etc.

Why should she have disclosed in the interview? So that management could find a paper reason to not hire her after she disclosed a protected class status?

Why do you think that sequence of events is lucky? No other explanation I suppose, right?
