I was offered what I thought to be a really good deal today on a OEM E6600.
Seller claims he needs cash soon, so he's selling ASAP. Anyway, it's supposedly new. But I see a definete square outline in the IHS. I'm thinking it's not new. I don't have a board to check it out yet. So, should the ISF be totally blemish free? I know, odd question, but I don't want a problem chip.

I had 3 of them and the are all pretty pristine....

What do you mean by square outline on the IHS? If it is an oem chip then they likely did not use the retail heatsink with thermal tape underneath it. Sometimes those will leave marks like that...Otherwise you should not have an square marks on it...

He said it was a tray chip, no retail box. I have not had a Intel CPU before. I guess they test them at the factory with a hsf? It may be just regular, normal marks left by the testing process. It was a square outline, centered in the center of the IHS, faint, scuff marks on the edge of the square. I might be reading too much into it, but at the price I'm thinking too good to be true.

I just looked at some of the Intel chips on Newegg that are OEM, and you know, they kinda look like that, so I probably got too suspicious. Here's a web pic, now I'm going from memory, but like this I guess. I think I could get it for about 200.00

Thanks

those are definetely new (although it is not what you are buying)

you know how you can tell? look at the border of the IHS (where the socket plate comes down on). those edges are spotless. if a cpu has been used, you will always see a crevice right where the plate comes down and applies force.

OK, I think I know what you are saying. The IHS presses on the black "gasket" and compresses it?

not the black gasket, but the flat edge of the IHS directly above the gasket.

basically the part of the IHS that is flat with the CPU.

thats where you will see the pressure marks.
