fyi: OC'ing doesnt remove crud

that mobo is excelent for OC'ing, ram that fast is not needed, save money on speed and go with a 1GB module
HD, i hear seagate is best
PSU, i reccomend an OCZ powerstream near that wattage
got a link to that cpu cooler?

btw, welcome to the forums

If you're thinking of a 6800gt, check out the X800XL before you buy it. Very close performance for significantly less.

Thanks for the welcome!

Here is a link for the cooler: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-118-115&depa=1 I might opt for the 7000 instead of the 7700 because of the weight of the 7700.

I chose that RAM after reading this article: http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2369

I plan on going SLI this fall. Does the X800XL SLI good? I guess I can do some research.

Only nvidia cards go SLI at the moment.

I agree with the cheaper ram suggestion. Buying that ram for $250 or whatever doesn't bring as much performance as buying $100 ram and spending the $150 saved on a faster videocard or processor.

x800xl cant do SLI, thats only for the PCI-E 6600Gt,6800Nu,6800GT, and 6800U.

The Motherboard is EXCELLENT.

the memory is the BEST memory you can buy right now. Just make sure you set the jumper on the mobo to change the max vdimm to 4V. 3.4V on that mem will push 260ish fsb and its still under warranty at that voltage.

Go ahead and order.

I'll stay Nvidia. I've got a 6600GT AGP in my current system. Very happy with it.

I agree, stock RAM performance at $100 and $250 will not be too different. BUT I plan on building this system to OC far beyond stock speeds. Spending more money on parts will ensure that I can do this. The MOBO/RAM combo seem to be the best out there at the moment.

Thanks for the opinions so far!

A good read on the benefits on faster ram before you make and decisions.

When your seriously into ocing, you want to stay 1:1. Not to mention the high fsb and tight timmings (2-2-2-5) the VX has will destroy regular PC3200 mem. Shit, VX @ 250 fsb 2-2-2-5 beats TCCD at 280 fsb...

Alright. I'm just offering some more info in case he decided the money could be better spent elsewhere. He can decide if $160 is a good price to pay for the performance gains over valueram.

My thoughts exactly. Although value ram will work great for most users.

I will take some time and read the RAM link. It's going to take a lot to steer me away from the OCZ RAM though. =P

Finding a GREAT HD and PSU is going to be a tough decision for me. Too many to choose from. Not enough good guides out there.

I've always used Western Digital for my hard drives and I just upgraded my PSU to a PC Power & Cooling 510 Deluxe. Built my system in July 2004 and no problems since then (knock on wood). I've OC'ed my system and got about 3.6 GHz out of it but decided to back of when I was having random reboots and the system got unstable. Right now I've got the system at stock speeds and it is rock solid.
