I don't think you can get it at 17 any longer. I think you can only get you're juniors when you turn 17.

Sweet, you can't get a full until 18 if I read this right? It's 16 in most areas of canada - far too young.

As long as you have 20 hours of authorized driving experience you can get your license, and you have to wait 6 months after you get your permit to take your road test. Also, I believe with the juniors license, you must now have an adult over 21 that is a relative (unless driving to work). When I got my juniors, I only had to have someone over 18 that was licensed. I really don't remember more now, but if you go to the New York State DMV website, they can tell you all you need.

Who has to be the professional, the person signing off that you drove 20 hours? I don't believe so, I believe a parent has to do that. But if you meant that you can drive with, it can just be a licensed 21 year old who is related to you in some way, shape or form.

yes, you need to complete a certain # of hours of driving with a authorized instructor before you can take your road test if your under 18.

also if you have a junior license, depending on where you live.. you can only drive certain times. NYC you can't drive at all with a junior license (don't get pulled over ;-) )

Yeah, but the times have remained the same. No later than 9PM, and no earlier than 4 or 6AM, I forgot. And yeah, it sucks to be in NYC and have a juniors, virtually no different than a real license. Isn't it illegal to drive in Manhattan until you're 18, even with a full license?

Geez what is next. Raise the driving age to 25?
I really don't see what was wrong with the original driving age restrictions. Worked for me when I was 16.

It doesn't work for a lot though. I mean damn why not make it 14 or 11 right? :) I cooled down a lot around the age of 18 as did my friends. When we were 16 we had _no place_ behind the wheel of a car. New drivers are bad enough as it is. When you throw in teenage immaturity along with that lack of experience it makes for a dangerous mix, well proven by not only anecdotal evidence from people who are surprised they made it into adulthood (like myself), but insurance numbers. The 16-18 year old group is responsible for a vast amount of accidents, and it's not only because they lack the experience from a new license.

But we all know that :) It just sucks when you're 16 and can't drive. I was scared about graduated licensing when I turned 16. It especially sucked since my friends already had theirs, so _I_ Might have been the only one to have to undergo it. I was lucky though and it didn't set in for another year or so. During that time I raced frequently with my friends, took a minivan with 7 people in it around corners frequently skidding on the cusp of losing control, and generally thought myself to be a god behind the wheel. I got in an accident along with every one of my male friends (except one guy who's mother wouldn't let him drive).

Are you smoking crack? Nassau and Suffolk are some of the least driving restrictions next to upstate. NYC has some of the strictest restrictions I have ever seen. I live in Nassau County, and i can say for fact you are dead wrong. Put it this way, in NYC you can only drive with a permit if you are in a driver ed car equipped with dual pedals. In Nassau on a permit you can go driving with a parent. On a juniors license in Nassau you can drive to work, and to college courses, and with relatives over 21 now. You cannot drive at all with a juniors in NYC.

When you take your final in drivers ed and pass, you get the 5 hour card, all it signifies is that you have had at least 5 hours of instructed learning time in a classroom, and have passed your test. Then you can schedule a road tes tif it is 6 months after your date of getting the permit.

No you don't. If you take drivers ed, you can get it at 17, if you decide not to take drivers ed, you must wait until 18. Drivers ed not only allows you to get it earlier, but you get a 10% discount on insurance, which is why it confuses me that some people dont put out the 300 bucks fro drivers ed.

It depends. The 5 hour course is meant for people not taking drivers ed. Depending on where drivers ed is given, it can meet once a week, or twice a week for in class instruction, and driving instruction.

I can agree to a point. Though when I was 16/17 I NEEDED a license to get to work.
There was no finding work closer, nor were my scheduals anything close to something my parents could help me with transportation.
Nor did I drive like a total asshole.
