New Nvidia Rumors?

Anyone heard any rumors as to what nvidias new video card will be and when it will be released? I'm in the market for a new rig and trying to decide when to buy.
 
Officially releasing in Q1 2010, with most sources saying that means early March. It's going to be huge, hot, power hungry, and stupidly fast. It's code named Fermi, or GF100. I'm sure with a bit of searching you can find more information than you ever wanted.
 
I saw that on a few sites but wasnt sure that was their new product or not. Have there been any tech demos or benchmarks on it yet?
 
I would definitely wait until after fermi is release. We should see a few price dips, plus, if it is a winner you'll always have the option to go with it over some other video card.

On paper, from an engineering point of view, it looks great.
We have yet to see if their drivers deliver.
 
I'd wait for Fermi if I was going to buy a new graphics card right now. When it comes out, we will know how fast it is and how much it will cost to buy one. Right now we don't have a clue about either of those two aspects.

If it is competitive with the Radeon 5000 series(which is very possible), then there will probably be a price drop on some or all Radeon 5000 cards.

This is true. Even if you do not plan on getting Fermi, it would be advisable to see if there are price drops after it's release. Most 5xxx series cards are selling above MSRP now and even their MSRP's are high to begin with.
 
Msrp of the Radeon 5 series is high? Actually it is the cheapest fastest Gpu in a very long time. I don't think that it is the price thats high buddy.
 
If you're not in a hurry, then wait a month or two. However, the radeon 5-series are a good buy if you want something now.

What do you have as a reference?

Nvidia's cards are more expensive and worse performing, I'd say HD58*0 are pretty damn cheap!
 
Based on the rumors I've read my guess would be that it'll be launched in late March to April. I'd also guess that availability on the part will be very limited for a while.

Nvidia hasn't released any benches yet, so I'm thinking because of that it'll still be a little while before they launch (they don't want to hurt current sales of current parts). If they had the part ready to launch I'd think they'd release some information to try and sway potential 58xx customers to wait.

I'm sure the part will be fast, but I doubt it'll be head and shouders above what you can buy now. But that's just my thoughts, there really isn't any information that can confirm or deny that yet. My $.02.

Fermi is almost certainly going to be closer to the performance of one GTX 295 than two of them.

You honestly think Fermi will be twice as fast as a GTX295? Based on the specs they've released I can't see that happening. It very well may be faster than a GTX295 in some areas, but I just don't see it being twice as fast as a GTX295 overall.

NVidia's cards are also old and haven't been replaced with newer parts yet; so yea of course when you compare them to what was a generation ago they're going to look like great buys (not saying they're not great buys just saying the comparison is flawed).

They are old, yes, but that doesn't really matter, does it? AMD have competetive pricing on their Cypress and Juniper GPUs. They are cheaper than the competition, and they are faster. Now, when Fermi is released, this will probably change MSRP a bit, but untill then, you have no choice but to compare existing cards.

My point is that Cypress and Juniper are cheap GPUs. They are not overpriced, something one can say with confidence that GT200b are.

The comparison isn't flawed, because the old cards is all NV has right now. Unless you ignore them completely and say AMD is the only choice right now. What else are you gonna compare them to - NV cards that will be released in the future with unknown performance?

I prefer to consider ATI the only choice right now. Physx isn't worth enough to get a 260 over a 5850 or whatever right now.

My reference is the 4xxx series MSRP when it came out, which is a fair comparison. You actually back my point up too because one of the primary reasons MSRP of the 5xx series is so high is that Nvidia has no viable competitive offering at the moment.
 
The prices are *not* so high. You are comparing to one generation of cards, the hd4x00 series of cards. Every other generation that i can remember in recent history has debuted higher than $400. Sure $400 can be argued as a lot of money but not in the world of highend GPU's

Going by Newegg prices, the 58xx cards are an absolute steal. The cheapest GTX285 is $390. The cheapest 5850 is $270... That's $120 less for a card that is faster and in my opinion is more future proof (unless you believe Physx is going to be a must have down the road).

The cheapest 5870 is $380. Again, cheaper than a GTX285 and a much faster part generally.

Seems to me that the AMD cards are priced pretty well compared to the competition. Or I guess you could say the prices are high and Nvidia's prices are insane. But I don't see how AMD could price them any lower given the price of the competition. Sure, it'd be nice if the prices dropped $100 across the board, but those prices just aren't realistic for high end parts.

You do realise that you just described the GeForce 5800 Ultra. That was hot, power hungry and huge. Hope Fermi is stupidly fast as you mentioned and not slow like the GeForce 5800 Ultra.
 
I am hoping that Nvidia release a video card like the 8800 GT, I had a XFX 8800 GT and it kicked ass. If Nvidia release a Fermi version of the 8800 GT then put me down for one. 🙂
