Sorry if this is a repost. I searched and didn't see it.

Anyway, NVidia has released some new GLX drivers for Linux. These add support for the GeForce4 cards, among other things. From their site:

<< Release Highlights for 1.0-2802:

* GeForce4 and Quadro4 Support (see products supported list)
* OpenGL(R) 1.3 with NVIDIA extensions
* Improved IGP and mobile support
* Overlay support for Quadro products
* MPEG acceleration for GeForce4 MX
* Anisotropic filtering support

Snag them here

I'm usually an early adopter of driver updates, but in this case, I've downloaded them but have not installed them yet.

Still happy with 2311, I actually read that there was one compatibility issue with the new drivers (check out gentoo.org for the issue and workaround).

bump for you nVidia people.

And how would you use Linux drivers with a FreeBSD system?!

I'll give them a try. I had to stop using the previous ones because they kept causing the system to crash. Occassionally, when the X-server was restarting the screen would just go blank and the whole OS would go down.

Heisenberg,

As a random suggestion, if you get that lock-up behavior again, set your AGP to 1X.

Under both Winblows and Linux, my system is very stable at AGP 1X, but occasionally flaky at 2X. It won't even enable 4X under any circumstances even though the chipset and card both support it.

Not that it matters, according to most 3D benchmarks.

I'll try that. Thanks. I'm pretty sure the problem is related to the AGP driver in some way as there's a thing in the README from Nvidia about that, and it's low-level enough to cause the kernel to crash. Just haven't really had time to mess with it.

I was just playing some RTCW with these, and I got about 44 FPS average. No accurate numbers yet, send me a good RTCW timedemo and I'll do some proper benchmarking.

This is with a GeForce2 Ultra @ 260/500 on Slackware 8, with a 2.4.18 kernel. 800x600, 1.5x FSAA, anisotropic filtering, and all the eyecandy I can get.

Just upgraded the drivers. So far so good.

I don't really use Linux for games, so as long as the system remains stable, I won't downgrade.

Thanks for the link. I dont use FreeBSD right now, and I will not purchase an nVidia card if I can help it. But it may be an interresting read ;)

<< you don't like nvidia? >>

No, I dont. I would look past it if I needed the graphics power, but I dont game or do 3d work, so they are unnecessary for me. Their lack of pure open source drivers bugs me, and some of their tactics in the past (long time ago, I dont have any links and dont remember the entire story). I dont have much love for ATI either, although I qould prefer to get an ATI card than nVidia. Ill have to make that decision for my next Mac, but until then I wont worry about it. Next card I buy will be cheap, so it wont matter who makes the chipset to me ;)

(Im considering an nVidia, if I can find one for the right price, but it will be in a 100% cli machine, so it wont matter)
