New nVidia 6800 GPUs Confusion (6800GS & 6800XT)

I have a 6600GT PCI-E, and I?ve been looking into a 6800 series GPU or a 7800GT.

Based on what I?ve read, do I have this correct? least powerful to most powerful:

6600GT > 6800XT > 6800NU > 6800GS > 6800GT > 6800U > 7800GT

Should I get a 6800GS now or hope for a boxing day sale on the 7800GT? I don?t want to spend more the $250US / $300CDN.

In Canada retailers on the 26th or 27th have fantastic sales to drive customer traffic (and to get them to cash in those gift cerrtificates).

so it's sorta like black friday after thanksginving. well, i dont think msrp the 7800gt will fall that far but, you never know and if you really dont need it now, might as well wait and see mayube a similar deal will pop up.

Correct. Canada's Thanksgiving is in October and we don't have anything like post-Thanksgiving sales.

yep u got that right

i think the XT has only 8pipes (not sure) but its extra memory bandwidth makes it better than the 6600

the 6800GS looks very sweet. 12 pipes, 425Mhz core, 1000mhz memory (256mb on 256bit) probably will be fairly close to a 6800GT overall.....and with a bit of luck it will be able to be UNLOCKED netting you a 6800Ultra if you keep the clocks the same.

but IMO if your gonna upgrade from a 6600GT now....just get a 7800GT, you wont be disapointed

The 6800GS is a 12 pipeline card manufactured on 110nm. It does not have pipelines to unlock - it's designed with only 12 pipes.

With that said, it's still an attractive card if it can hit the <$200 price point.

HotHardware oc'd their EVGA 6800gs to 540/1.23, which isn't shabby.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I just couldn't pull the trigger on a 7800GT or 6800GS purchase, so I'm upgrading to 2 x 1024MB RAM instead. (Currently have 2 x 512).

Was that a better idea?

is a good choice for the future, but you wont get really beytter perfromance yuntil the 6600gt stops choking your system.
