Hey guys,

I sold my Macbook Pro 17" that had the 2.4 ghz Santa Rosa along with a 8600M GT and the 1920x1200 resolution. Great notebook, had a tough time fitting it in my backpack so I decided it was time to sell it and move on. Ended up getting good value for it and now I"m in a situation where I'm in the market (again) because I cannot find that sweet spot in gaming/size/performance/weight for the notebook sector.

My questions pertain to the new Penryn, yes I know that the marginal gains and battery life make the waiting game a little useless if the laptop is a critical tool in my inventory, but time isn't a factor so I'm throwing this out there.

Other than the m15x (Which I was going to get but I'm not since alot of people said Alienware's customer service sucks and they're very bad with product warranties), is there anything else out there? I know the m15x didn't have the Penryn but it was a 15" laptop that weighed only 7 LBs being 1.3" thick with an 8800M GTX. Yes I want an 8800M gtx that bad; it's not going to be my main PC but I would like to have that thought of gaming whatever I want on my laptop (The sheer thought is comforting :) ).

Is a Penryn/8800M Gtx 15"er coming out anytime soon? Will it possibly be the same size (or smaller of course) as the Alienware m15x? I don't want a sager or any of those brick-sized laptop brands, I want a slick notebook that has these features.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

No, I won't be able to help because I don't keep up with who has the latest and greatest notebooks :).

Asus may be refresh the G1S series with a 8800GTX and Penryn, that's just about the only other series that is a reasonable size and has a decent GPU.

The new Dell 1525 just came out and has the 8600GT, though I'm not sure it has Penryn. Might be worth some research.

Might try checking notebookreview.com too.

It'd be hard to find something in your sweet spot -- the m15x is the only computer I know of in the 15-inch size that will have the 8800M GTX, and even the GTS is unlikely to be found at that size.

If you're willing to wait for mid-February, Apple should update the MacBook Pro. No word on the video card, but Penryn is a given (looking at 2.5/2.6GHz) and you may end up with a Mobility Radeon HD 3600 or a GeForce 9600M. The ATI hardware has been announced already.

And when are eSATA ports going to be commonplace on notebooks? The HDDs are already SATA - shouldn't be too big a deal. Beats the hell out of USB!

I want the alienware so bad but no Penryn yet means it's nto worth what they're asking.
Leading candidate for what I want. I don't think I want a MacBook ever again. It breeds a personality complex I"m not willing to have. (Been a PC kiddo since I was 10, 1997 before my bday)

Let me guess you are 18 years old now? I am surprised many 18 yr olds did not like MacBook Pro!
