I wanted to upgrade my ram from 8gb ddr3 to 16gb ddr3

I noticed the same kit I bought years ago is now nearly double the price

Did some quick google/redditing and it seems everyone has noticed

Some are talking about supply this and that, ddr4 etc etc...

But the RAM i am looking at is ddr3, old stuff, and should be cheap

Is it just because mfrs know system building is on the rise and as demand goes up so to can price?

Should I wait to upgrade my RAM or is this the new normal?

It's because DDR3 is on its way out, same thing happened to DDR2 when DDR3 was the newer tech. If you can't switch to DDR4 buy it now while it's still at a decent price.

For DDR3, the second-hand market is probably your best bet. Tons of users must have a bunch of DDR3 sticks laying around after upgrading to DDR4 systems.

As mentioned, DDR3 is old tech now and being phased out, along with good ol' supply/demand. Combined with the ram cartels being well, cartels prices have shot back up. This has happened a lot over the the past 20-30 years and will for the forseeable future. From 2007-2010 or so, I bought 2gb of ddr2 ram for eh, $40. Next year it was $80. Year after that, same ram was $40 again.

My current favorite reason is Samsung setting prices because they're using most of their ram chips for phones after the one model setting fire to itself. 16gb is probably a good investment even with the higher prices if you're going to keep your current system for 2+ more years. Just have to bite the bullet. I'm wishing I'd bought some spare DDR4 last year myself.

I wanted more RAM for my music production which I am using more multi gb samplesets and my 8gb is going too fast

And Ive read that RAM speed can help in open world games where my aging 2500k needs all the help it can get

I had 8gb 1600mhz just bought 16gb 2133mhz for 109.99
