New Nintendo Console Debuting At E3 This June, Launching In 2012 Update: New Details

Nintendo's next console will debut at E3 in June, moving the maker of Mario and Zelda into the HD era. The news, first reported by Game Informer today, confirms rumors that have been swirling for months in the wake of slowing game releases from Nintendo.

Furthermore, we've heard that the machine will be more powerful than current-gen systems, meaning Nintendo, currently backing a Wii that is weaker in horsepower than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will be showing a new console that is more powerful than those current competitors.

We've asked Nintendo for comment and will let you know if they shock us and spill the beans. Update: Nintendo responded to our inquiry with a standard "Nintendo does not comment on rumor or speculation".

E3 kicks off on June 7, though Nintendo's E3 press conference may occur the day before, if tradition holds.

I'm not going to lie, I am damned curious. This seems like a great time for Nintendo to start rolling out a new console, but it'll all depend on how accurate this is about the power of the system.

Merged threads. New info on page 5.

More powerful is a given. PS3 and 360 are ancient in tech terms. Nintendo will be able to make a more powerful system for cheaper and make a profit on each one sold still as they always do.

Of course it'll be more powerful then current gen stuff since technology has progressed a lot in the past 5+yrs but it won't be super powerful so they can keep down costs. Nintendo has shown that you don't need a powerhouse console to win. I suspect it'll be priced around the same as the Wii was when it came out so they can keep that trend going.

How is the PS3 ancient in tech terms?

Yeah being more powerful isn't a surprise, it should be a minimum requirement at best.

Am I the only one that doesn't want new consoles? Especially not a new Wii? The first one only had like 5 good games, and they all made minimal use of the motion controls. A HD Wii (Wii 1.5) doesn't sound very appealing.

The new Nintendo console means nothing to me. it's just a news headline. I'm ready for a new Microsoft and Sony console, though, as long as they don't make some shitty motion control proprietary.

It's using old hardware, like an nvidia 7800 video card from 2005. Since then PCs have had nvidia 7900, 8800, 2xx, 4xx, 5xx GPUs.

If the new Wii is backwards compatible and cheap, I might finally pick one up. I'm not a fan of Mario or Zelda so there have only been a few games that looked interesting to me.

Thanx, really the only thing i know/knew what it used the Cell processor.

It's not a given, otherwise Wii would be more powerful than the Xbox 1.
I'd say we'll be lucky if it outperforms the top end mobile phones out now.

PS3 uses a 7900GT crippled with a 128-bit memory bus and only 256 MB of video RAM. Its GPU was pretty much outdated from day 1. . . IIRC, PS3 launched around the same time as the 8800GTX, which completely mopped the floor with all existing GPUs.

On another note, is anybody really interested in Nintendo anymore? For me, it becomes harder and harder to get excited about the next Mario/Zelda/Mario Kart/Metroid/Pokemon/Smash Brothers etc. Playing their games, it just feels like I'm "going through the motions" yet again. Am I the only one?

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it.

The important thing to see is what they end up doing with the new Zelda. It's been a very long time since nintendo has released a big budget AAA game. If skyward sword has me reading text boxes instead of watching high quality cinemas with good voice acting, then my excitement for anything new they have to show is really going to be tempered. The hardware is one thing, but they haven't shown that they can keep up production-wise with the state of the art. And the wii is more than capable of that, and theyre just not trying.

They're already lagging a generation behind. Back when it was released, I never thought they'd have the balls to stretch that ancient wii hardware out for more than three years. For them to carry it to five and probably six years is almost suicidal. They may have won short term but they're losing long term mindshare and relevancy. The 3DS is neat but it's not exactly pushing the hardware or software barriers.

I'd still rather have mario and Zelda in whatever form they end up taking than not at all, but man, they have a lot of catching up to do.

I still find their "golden games" still very much fun.

personally i dont really care much, i am not getting fooled by nintendo again.

fool me once, shame on you. (gamecube)

fool me twice, shame on me. (wii)

Yeah, outside of wii sports, they haven't really taken that many risks. Mario galaxy, twilight princess and smash brawl are still quality games, but they're decidedly old school in style nowadays. They haven't changed much at all since the mid 90s.

Maybe I was expecting too much, but I don't feel that I got much from the Wii. Haven't had a Wii exclusive Zelda this generation, a couple Mario games and not much else. I don't necessarily regret the purchase, but would probably not buy it again.

Thanx, really the only thing i know/knew what it used the Cell processor.

Even the Cell is old hat. It was supposed to revolutionize power computing, until GPGPU put an end to it. Then Apple dumped PowerPC, which the Cell is based on. Not a good time for Toshiba/IBM.

The current Wii, if I recall, is just an overclocked GameCube. It was outdated from day one, but rode high on the motion gimmick.

I'm expecting the new Wii to at minimum be 3D-capable. I'll be really surprised if it isn't.

What's wrong with those systems?

i bought both at launch due to hype then sold them pretty quickly there after because the lack of games on them was astounding.

i even bought another gc later on when mario sunshine came out, and sold that one fairly quickly after.

granted the wii has a couple games i would like to play now, but the fact i can't hook it to my monitor is one of the reasons i haven't gotten another one. i'd like to play DKCR, Galaxy 2, and NSMB.

not saying i won't like the new nintendo system, i just really doubt i will get it at launch. although i'm a sucker for video game hype 🙁

I had a Gamecube and loved it. IMO I thought it had tons of very good games. The thing with Nintendo systems is that you always have to depend on Nintendo for getting good games as 3rd party support has been lackluster with their last few systems.

I'm pretty sure Reggie said outright they're not going for 3D.

Still, the system will probably be capable of it by default, so third parties can go there if they want. If it's using HDMI it'll obviously be at least 1.4, and worst case scenario, they can do the side by side format.
