What a huge suprise! It seems like the rumor that just sounded insane has come true!

1. D3

- 100% frame coverage
- 12.3 Megapixel FF CMOS sensor
- New image processor called EXPEED that will provide better AF, AE, AWB
- 9 fps for FF, 11 fps for crop
- 3 Inch VGA LCD (4 times more resolution than current LCDs)
- Weather Proof
- 51 AF points, 19 cross sensor AF points.
- ISO 200-6400. Supports 100, 25600!

2. D300

- 100% frame coverage
- 12 Megapixel Sony CMOs
- Weather Proof
- 3 Inch VGA LCD (4 times more resolution than current LCDs)
- 51 AF points, 19 cross sensor AF points.
- 6 fps, 8 fps with vertical grip attached

3. Lenses

AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED
AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR
AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4.0G ED VR
AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4.0G ED VR

Both feature:
* New Canon's picture style-like in-camera image processing called Picture Control System
* HDMI port
* Supports AF when using Live-View. Not only that it supports Contrast detection AF system, thus far better than that of Olympus and Canon.

* More detailed news will be announced within a few hours. I'll also update specs at any given time. Stay tuned!

# Updated:

Nikon developed 4 FF sensor line-ups:

1200 Megapixel
1600 Megapixel
2200 Megapixel
2400 Megapixel

Now, it's a huge deal and kudos for Nikon for finally and succesfully developing their own sensors(Unlike LBCAST that failed.) Once they take this step further and start actually manufacturing sensors in their own factory, Nikon will be able to play the game far better.
(Although it's not clear at this point, rumor has it that those sensors are being made in Sony's lab)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My 2 cents:

At first, this rumor just sounded insane but then again, considering how Nikon has been trying hard to recapture the market, it sounded somewhat reasonable especially so cosidering D200.
Even so, the above spec. is just too good to be true yet it's true. Not only Nikon has come out with FF camera that many desired, the one camera(D3) is a killer
for both of Canon's 1D mk3 and 1DS mk3. Now, Canon, the market leader, is facing a serious challenge. No longer Canon will be able to play the game the way they played;
Canon will have to take it seriously and beef up their specs.

Yeah the D3 will be able to take DX lenses in crop mode. I just hope noise will be better.

Yes, D3 will take DX lenses. The crop factor will be, of course, there as well.
Given how Nikon gave up on FF(as told by president of Nikon) in digital era and produced various DX lenses, it's a logical and right choice.

I'm getting a D300 as soon as possible. There were a few times I considered upgrading to a D200 but I am glad I held off. I'm blown away.......just fantastic specs. The D3 is even better of course, but way out of my price range.

NICE!

Release in November? That's too far away ><

Finally some competition for Canon in the high end.

November is a gnat's whisker away, it's only 9 weeks. That'll blast past ;)

Now if you'd asked me if i thought 9 weeks was a long time when i was studying, i would have said 'hell yeah' ;)

Could you explain what that means? Still a bit of a DSLR noob here :(

As i understand it, since the DX lenses were designed to 'project' onto an APS-C sensor, in this case they will 'project' onto an APS-C sized part of the big ol puppy on the D3, giving these shots a 5.1mp 'resolution', and the crop characteristics of shooting with a DX lens on a APS-C body...

while both camera's are pretty cool, they're still a little out of my price range. It'd be nice if Nikon revamped the lowend. Like maybe a D40 with live preview and an autofocus motor at the same price it's at now.

HOLY COW 1230 MEGAPIXELS?!?! OMG Canon's measly 21MP is in serious trouble ;)

This is such a cool feature IMO. To autocrop when it senses a DX lens is really cool. The only "problem" is that the picture would be only 5MP, but this is definitely solvable with a higher resolution sensor in the future. This is the kind of creative thinking that I absolutely love about competition.

If Canon did this with their FF cameras (the 21MP 1DsMKIII would probably be at least 8MP cropped) it would be awesome. Not that I could afford it.

Haha, thanks for pointing that out. It's fixed now.

D3/D300 can do AF on live view without dropping the mirror. i wonder how well it works, how crappy the AF in nikon's compacts is?

unfortunately canon's crop format lenses don't work on their 35 mm cameras. i still don't see the point of EF-S.

edit: read that wrong, thought D300 was FF

edit3: i'm dumb

So how does the D300 compare to Canon's 40D? Are they in the same class, or does one out class the other? There is a significant price difference between the two ~ $1200 vs $1800

D300 can contrast detect AF during live view, has a much better LCD, no idea on the relative effectivness of the dustbusters, has a stop higher sensitivity, has 2 more MP, slightly slower continuous (but longer) (faster with grip), wider exposure compenstation/bracketing range, 51 point autofocus vs 9, color focus tracking (i guess that's an improved continuous focus mode), lossless and lossy compressed raw available (12 and 14 bit selectable), 100% coverage viewfinder, 150,000 shot shutter, UDMA compact flash, perhaps better weatherproofing, spot meter follows AF point.

40D has interchangeable focus screens, WB bracketing, motorized mirror (shorter blackout, more quiet), external USB media support with wireless grip, sRAW, special fast AF modes for bright lenses.

D300 with grip is pretty close to a 1D competitor.

What? How did I mislead you and others? Where did I say that D300 is a FF camera????
How did you manage to read wrong when I didn't even mention anything about D300 being a FF camera???

I'm definitely impressed and I can't wait to see real-world results from these cameras. I didn't believe the rumored specs at all, but that's what Nikon delivered. On paper, these are impressive machines that I wish I could justify getting (that D3 is a dream for me now).

The best part about all this is the price drop we should see on the D2Xs and the D200. I would love to add a D2Xs to co-exist with, or replace, my D2H and after the new year, I may just be able to do that.

Very exciting times for all DSLR users. Both Canon and Nikon just released some impressive hardware that should make a lot of people happy.

bah, i'm reading "100% frame coverage" and thinking the photographic sensor, not the viewfinder.
