I installed a new NIC in my laptop. The 3com drivers installed just fine. The install then asked for the win 98 disk to grab a bunch of DLL files. I no longer have the orig disk nor are there any .cab files on the drive. What can I do to install this NIC?

Find somebody with a Win98 disk and then copy the cabinet files to your HDD. Your hosed unless you can find a disk or someone willing to send you the cab files or the individual files windows is looking for.

Sometimes you can point to the System directory in the Windows folder and Windows can find the needed DLLs there. It will not necessairly work, but usually it will.

Thats true. Sometime the files you need are in other directories. The system directory for dll's or the windows directory itself for other file extensions. I would disagree with it usually working however. Depends on what your installing. I would say usually you need the cabs but its worth a try if you havent tried looking for the files already.

See what file it needs, then search the web for it... I had the same problem, and was able to do that.

If the OS was pre-installed by an OEM, then you can always try looking in path
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

Handy Tip:
Whenever I setup a W9x system, I make sure and stash a copy of the installation files from the CD somewhere on the drive. Super-handy for just such an occasion, and well worth the use of 300-400MB.

True, though usually its cached and finds the cabs on its own. I have seen C:\win98 as a cabinet repository as well.
