What the hell is this? I saw it on the Colts preseason game last night. Normally the umpire is sitting behind the linebackers. Now the QB/Center can't hike the ball until the umpire gets out of the way and gets a signal from the line judge?

This could really mess with an offense if they're trying to get a quick snap off or what the colts do a lot is catch 12 defensive players on the field. I think it stinks.

First off, it was the Packer's preseason game last night :)

2ndly, yeah it seems like a stupid rule, and based off last nights events, I'm sure its being HEAVILY reviewed as we speak. I undertand the concept, so the umpire isn't stuck in the middle of the pile, but as Gruden/Jaws pointed out last night... tough shit. That's their job. Give them a helmet if there is concerned.

Oh and 18 games in 2012? STuuuuuuuuuuuuoooooooooooopid.
NFL is spiraling.

this will result in more holding calls for sure

i know one "issue" that was brought up was that the QB had to turn around to see if the umpire was in position, but they don't, the line judge will signal when they are

Right, that's what they said last night. But this particular umpire looked like he would have a hard time getting out of the way of a center or guard, much less a receiver or RB if he was in his normal spot.

referee. umpires are in baseball.

way to just say something wrong for the fun of it!

You often hear them referred to by the general term of referee, but there is actually only one referee on the field during a game. Each official (usually seven in college and NFL games) has his own title and assigned responsibilities. Following are the responsibilities of each along with their positioning on the field: • Referee
• Umpire
• Head Linesman
• Line Judge
• Back Judge
• Field Judge
• Side Judge

What was wrong with just waiting for the ball to be placed? What does the umpire wait for before moving?

It is a dumb rule.

<================Not that I am biased or anything.

Rule or not, it wouldn't have helped you last night. :)

What's up with Brackett's arm? It looked A LOT worse in the replay than the MNF crew was suggesting. I thought I saw his arm take a direct helmet hit and kind of "bend around" the helmet.

Edit: I hate the name change. :)

Colts are always terrible in preseason. I think they won one game last year in preseason.

Not sure, I haven't had time to read the Indy Star today to see the latest.

It was either this or Manning2Wayne, which I would've had to change again when they retired. :)
