I know theres the never ending cycle of things constantly getting better but is now the time to buy a 6800gt and OC it to or past Ultra settings? or should i hold out on my 9800pro and wait for more of the new stuff to come out? keep in mind that im running AGP and have no intention of switching over to PCI-E untill i build my next PC. (just build my curent one 1 year ago) so im not gonna be buildin another PC till around 2006-07. So is there gonna be anything much better than the 6800GT for AGP in the future? If so, what will it be? (ex. X900, 6900gt etc.) Basicly im asking for a vidcard roadmap :D I tried lookin on google and couldnt really find anything to satisfy me. could anyone help me solve this problem?

Current high end cards:

Nvidia nv40 - all the 6800 variants

ATI r420 - all the x800s

Next gen - nVidia a "refresh" this Winter (nv45?) 6850 is the likely naming convention.

next gen ati - a refresh (r480) this Winter x850? x900?

For '05 - nVidia - nv50

for '05 - ati - r520 (they are 'skipping' r500 to add shader 3.0) it's the x-box next GPU

probably gonna have PCI-e and AGP versions of these cards thru '05 - by then the AGP will be dropped for the highest end cards.

I dont think we are going to start seeing these next NEXT gen cards until at least 1.5 years after the x800's and 6800 become available in large quantities. So that puts us into late Q4 05 or even early Q1 06. Actually, by the looks of things right now i dont think we'll see them before mid 06.

x-box next is due mid '05 and it is VERY reasonable the r520 (and competing nV50) will also be launched at or around the same time. ;)

We were hoping for a longer time between launches but it looks like the Graphics war has heated up again and launches will continue to be yearly . . . kinda expensive for the cutting edge adopter . . . great for the ones that pick HW matched closer to what game actually require for great IQ/FPS. ;)

Everything you read/hear about the future is speculation....

My guess is 2006. Sometime in there. MAYBE then u can get a next gen card at a price premium.

From what ive heard, the Dual Core AMDs who in fact are doing the multi core design for the Xbox 2, will be ready q1 05 for the server and workstation market, and by Q2 - Q3 the desktop versions will be ready and also i do hear taht the R520 is slated for mid 2005 release as well as the NV50, so i cant see the Xbox 2 being delayed into 2006, it would probably only come out a few months after AMD and ATi release their PC versions.

Low end cards will be named x79000000000000000000!@!!!@#!!! XT PRO ULTRA EXTREME platinum edition and both companies will use that name except ATI will be that +1 at the end.

IBM is making the CPUs for the XBox2, not AMD (and considering you don't even have this straight, I find your information highly suspect to say the least). It's supposedly using a dual-core variant of the Power5 (yes, using the PowerPC instruction set), which is not looking to be widely available until at least Q1 '05. I wouldn't expect the XBox2 until Q3 at least, unless IBM changes their tune. And unless MS is a *lot* further along than they're letting on (and they have a lot of people under NDA), they wouldn't have any games if they launched it much earlier than that.

I wouldn't be shocked if ATI had the R500/520/whatever out in late 2005, but I just can't see them pushing a totally new hardware rev before Q4, unless they've decided to just abandon the R400 architecture as rapidly as possible.

But, seriously, there's no way to predict the market or the new products with much accuracy this far ahead. That said, I doubt anything will seriously challenge the 6800GT for at least a year -- assuming the fall/winter refresh parts are similar to the 5950U and 9800XT in the last generation (ie, just clockspeed bumps).

The refreshes will probably just be clock bups, no new cards for at least 6 months, if not more.

So a card now won't be far behind the refreshes at all (think 9800 vs 9800XT, or even 9700Pro vs 9800XT)

Well R500 maybe delayed due to XBOX2 delay but that might not stop ATI from releasing R520(pc version). After all they want SM3.0 to the game ASAP. Unless R480 will not be just a refresh core but support SM3.0 and that way they can leave R520 for the late 2005.

But, seriously, there's no way to predict the market or the new products with much accuracy this far ahead. I agree it's just pure speculations, but following logic:
It all depends on ATI's moves I believe. Nvidia isn't the one in hurry here since NV40 is powerful enough and supports SM3.0. So I believe that they will have something to respond when ATI release R520.
DX10 seems far away so I don't see why Nvidia HAS to release something with great anxiety...
And we are forgetting that these cards (NV40/R420) have availability problems so this might delay things a little more. Memory chips are the handicap here

What games can you NOT run? I'm still sitting on my 64MB Radeon 8500, I'd be thrilled to have 9800 Pro performance and it certainly would be enough for me for any current game I play or upcoming game I am anticipating.

Save your money and WAIT and see what PCI-e might have to offer.

Ur right, i can curently run all the game i want to but not with everything high on all settings. And for HL2 i want everything and i mean everthing, all the eye candy and stuff on full blast. and i know my 9800 pro wont be able to do that. i know you might be thinkin "wat a spoiled little..." but i really want super performance in HL2 and Doom3 and all the following games to use those engines. I'm going to be building a new PC for myself anyway in june of 2006 (end of senior year of high school, going into collage) so i think a 6800gt OCed to or past ultra speeds should hold me till then :p

back down on the resolution and you should be able to run all the details, oh well, it just might be your loss if things turn out the way many are anticipating.
