EDIT: Looks like the theatrical DVD's release date is set at May 25th for Region 1. New Line should release specs shortly after the academy awards (feb 29).

=============

Looks like we'll be getting the theatrical version in May or June and the Extended Edition (confirmed to be 4 hours and 10 minutes long by PJ who just finished editing it) in November again. Hey at least we don't have to wait til LATE AUGUST for the TE:

Now that the last installment of The Lord of the Rings saga has reaped 11 Oscar nominations and appears a shoo-in for best picture, there is another concern on the minds of its fan fellowship.

When can we expect the extended DVD version of The Return of the King?

Director Peter Jackson just edited the four-hour, 10-minute longer cut, due in November. The theatrical version will arrive in May or June.

Speaking from his hotel in Los Angeles, the Kiwi was in a splendid mood, despite a lack of Oscar nominations for his cast. "Sean (Astin, who plays hobbit Sam) was our chance at it. There were other great performances, but his was the name we were praying to hear this morning."

He enjoyed his first Golden Globes ceremony, where King went four for four with wins. Save for one discovery: New Zealand is left off the globe portion of his statue. "I'll have a quiet word with them."

The way I read the article is it is a "Four Hour: 10min longer" cut. Not confirmed 4 hrs 10min runtime.

?

EDIT: I mean the EE is only extended by 10min not 4hrs 10min

Nah, it's not going to be a 7 hour, 30 minute version....that would need to be split across 4 DVDs for the movie alone. Plus even I'll admit that is too long...lol.

I was kind of hoping for the 4:50 rumor to be true. 4:10 is what, about an extra 30min? I didn't even keep track of time for ROTK.

i visited HK during Christmas vacation, and LOTR was out on Dec.17, didnt want to wait to see it after my vacation. Well, I liked it a lot. However, on Dec.20 or something, I found some illegal-copy cd/dvd shop was selling 7 dvd's for 100 HK dollars. well.... 100/8 is about 12.5 US dollars for any 7 dvd. guess wut i found, LOTR3. they had the dvd on the market 2 or 3 days already. well, of course they recorded with a home camcorder. The quality was acceptable.... Well, it was actually very impressive quality for a camcorder.

Umm...yay?

Pirated copies aren't exactly a revelation.

I baught one copy and watched it again when I returned to the US. I think it was very enjoyable... not only i get to enjoy from the movie itself, but also i get to enjoy its chinese subtitle. THOSE ARE FUNNY. nearly half of the translation was incorrectly translated. omg, not just a phrase of a sentence, i am talkin about the entire sentence was translated incorrectly. i really can't relate the chinese subtitle to the movie. at first, i thought they messed it up the subtitle with other movie. after a couple minutes, i learned the subtitle is for LOTR...

Well, at least I can rent the TE sooner. Not suprised the extended will be later, as they will probably still be working on some things when the TE is released.

Good deal!

I will have to buy the regular version when it comes out. I have the other two theatrical versions as well so I'll complete my set for the theatrical releases, and it's awesome if it comes out in May. I did not buy, nor have I seen the Extended Versions of any of them. I'm waiting until they come out with a super, duper, triple boxed set EE edition.

The extended versions contain so much character development material, that they make the movies a completely different (and superior for me) experience.

Highly recommended.

I whole heartedly agree, it's like watching a different movie.

I'll be buying both versions like I did for the first 2 releases. There's great extras on both versions.

I was afraid people would say that so I've been hesitant b/c I don't want to spend the money on the EE versions right now. Now I have to go out and buy the EE versions anyway thanks to you guys ;)

Go buy the EE's, now. Even if there is a mega box set it won't have any new features. Maybe 5 years down the road but not now...it will just be the 3 EE's packaged together most likely.

The theatrical's pale in comparison and I'll probably never watch them again.

The main reason I posted this was for the release dates of both releases....this info isn't in that post. Also that one was from just some fan or "ringer spy"...this one is from a reputable source so it's confirmed.
