original series? what? they didn't make this.

as far as sci-fi anime goes though this one is actually pretty good.

Hmm:

Netflix's original content library continues to grow and expand into new TV genres. The latest is Knights of Sidonia, an anime based off a manga about genetically-altered mech pilots fighting shapeshifting aliens. The series originally aired in Japan earlier this year, but now all 12 episodes of season one are set to hit Netflix everywhere it's available on July 4th. Netflix's version also features a new voice cast for the English dub, though a subtitled version will be available as well. Check out the trailer Netflix posted on YouTube today, which highlights the post-apocalyptic, space operatic nature of the show.

So does that mean it's a Netflix original in Japan & then dubbed in English for the American market, or that a third-party studio created the series & all Netflix did is bring it over to the US?

Yeah, the first season already aired in Japan and a 2nd season was just announced. If you can get past the clunky character animations, the story and setting are very enjoyable.

its based on a manga. the anime adaptation is a japanese production.

all 3d CG HD @ 60hz, supposedly the animation feels different at 60.

the 1st season is pretty good, they make some changes to the order of some events in the original manga. the second season has been greenlit and given the pacing it shouldnt overtake the manga.

i would have preferred 2d character animation and 3d for the ship/mecha, something about everyone having the same body and head is a little offputting. the manga art style is slightly less anime(pointed chins, big eyes) and more conventional human.

No. It's just a normal anime that Netflix grabbed the broadcast rights to. Based on the title, I thought that Netflix was making their own series similar to MTV's Aeon Flux, but once I recognized the name, I knew it wasn't the case. 🙁 I actually haven't seen the series yet, but I've been meaning to start it for weeks now. Although, I keep putting it off for some reason, and I ended up starting Nisekoi today. :|

EDIT:

Although, I am glad that they're putting up subtitled versions too. I think I only ever checked out one anime on Netflix, and it was dubbed. :\

I've seen the first 3 episodes. It seems promising, but something about the animation is very jarring to me. Mostly the animation of movement and people. It feels pretty stiff and low budget, with as few movements as humanly possible.
