should just wait little bit more, bought my 2500a 8x around 3 weeks ago, :disgust:

nec 3500a

its 32x going to be out soon?
The Pioneer DVR-108 is a higher-quality drive, and the new 1.10 firmware improves many things (all reviews are using <=1.06 at this time, so they aren't indicative of true performance.) 32x probably won't ever come out, as at that speed a standard DVD disc would fragment. Unless a different material is used in the future, 32x isn't possible.

Ah, comes to $89.95+tax=$97 - also watch out as it seems to add one to your order, I tried twice and it initially added two to my cart instead of one, then I removed one, then added one and it came to three!

Newegg (which I'd feel safer with) is $87+4+tax=$98, but includes 5 DVD-R's.

32x will never happen, 16x is very close to the theorectical limit of a spinning disc.

It's still unclear between this and the Pioneer speed-wise, but this is a better CD burner and DVD ripper, although some reviews say the Pioneer has better quality burns at the cost of speed.

Neat!

I want to see a shootout between the Pioneer and the NEC. Truthfully, I'm pretty happy with anything that burns at 4x, so 4x DL should be fine. Well...I hacked my Lite-on into an 8x...so faster is better ;)

I can't wait to make a wicked nice Ghost backup with a DL disk...put all my programs plus Windows and updates onto one big disc :)

Don't forget though, that DL is twice the size of SL (obviously) so 4x DL will take twice as long as 4x SL as you're burning twice the data, if you see the logic there....?

From what I've heard, you can burn a 4x 8.5Gb DL disc in about 23mins, as apposed to a 4x 4.7Gb SL disc in about 14mins.

Of course, these 16x SL drives have yet to achieve a 6min burn, as they take too long to get up to speed (Pioneer 1.10 firmware improved this slightly) and the media is only really rated at 8x. I heard the NEC manages 13x tops, the Pioneer does 12x.

The Battle of the Burners * I believe this is using older firmware on the Pioneer, but don't see it specified in the review; I think firmware 1.10 was released after August 14th, the date on the first page, but I'm not sure

The Battle of the Burners Part 2

This review is ongoing, as more tests/media/firmware are tested.

Never say never! :D Perhaps we're just not yet being imaginitive enough.

It's often brought up in the silicon fab industry that back in the mid-80s some famous guy (no one recalls his name now because he's no longer famous) stated the we'd never print features below 1 micron; that there was a theoretical limit to stepper technology. I was first told about this statement in 1993 while doing an internship where the fab had state-of-the-art 0.5 micron steppers.

I think 16x may very well be the fastest DVD recorder ever produced. Not that the technology couldn't go faster eventually, but there will be no need. DVD recorders will be replaced with "blu-ray" (sp?) recorders, which will store much more data per square inch, thus having a higher transfer rate while spinning more slowly.

sorry for the newbie question.. but with burners like these (that can burn pretty much everything) what kind of media is recommended? There are way too many formats and I have no idea what the pros/cons are for each one. Any links on where to read up on that?

thanks

Thanks for the links. I'll be picking up one of these drives in the near future.
