ok, expect to see more idiots on your college campus soon...thanks to the new academic standards set by the NCAA.

from story

NCAA Division I board of directors approved a new set of academic proposals that will allow college coaches in every sport to recruit high school athletes who achieved no better than a 400 on their SAT.

That's right: 400, which is, not so coincidentally, the lowest score possible.

Not a single answer correct on the test.

WTH??!!

Look on the bright side, it will bump up your class rank a few notches.

it's not like that changes much. the good college athletes in most school don't even have to attend class.

it's all about money and accountability - they just want to rake in the dole and leave the academic accountability to someone else; and the graduating HS superstar's just as corrupted by the smell of cash, thinking sports is the way to go.

not all can make the pros, so when they're finished with school and don't cut it in the big leagues, they then realize how hard it is to find a job when you don't know the answer to one plus one.

in the end, it's the uneducated superstar who's going to lose.

Don't be so pessimistic about this, it's a good thing. In an era of distrust about corporate profits, inflated baseball stats and politicians on the take, it's nice to see our bastions of higher learning turning to honesty. No longer will they feel the need to hire somebody to take the SATs for their prized criminals-in-training, ummm, I mean talented recruits. Rather than subjecting us all to post-game interviews to prove that their student athletes are illiterate louts, now at least we'll have the evidence up front. Now if only we could get the U.S. Congress to follow the same standards...

Why should they have to. they are already getting screwed by playing for free while making these colleges millions why make them work to pass?

I don't see what the problem is. Most athletes do get fairly good grades. And of the ones that don't, if they want to be athlete's, why do they need to be booksmart?

McPhreak, it doesn't bother you that someone who can't even add gets a full scholarship while the real students who have to study and work his/her ass off for the SAT still might not be admitted because of the intense competition of college admissions? I'd be pretty pissed if I applied to Duke with a 1400 SAT, 4.0 GPA and I didn't get accepted while some other guy got in just coz he can play basketball.

What do we live for and whats more important? Mathmatics, or sports and the arts. I mean to say when was the last time you paid to watch a guy do operon models faster than another. Athletics have just as important of a role (and certainly more mass appeal) than any other major in college. Why should they even have to go to an acedemic class? They bust thier butts doing two-a-day practices, working on thier skill-set and must preform come game time. Their class is the court why double thier load?

Yeah, but look at it this way. Your smarts will never leave you. If he/she sprains/breaks their leg etc. their scholarship might go bye-bye.

Hmm.. do sports really pave the way for a cure for diseases? Do sports really pave the way for medical breakthroughs? No wonder the US is ranked on the bottom of the ladder compared to the rest of the world academically.

I agree with SubZeroX. I bust my ass off to get into a good school and some guy comes along and takes potential scholarship money away from me because he can jam the ball but can't answer a single question on the SAT's?

How sad nowadays that colleges have sunk this low. :(

Did you read the entire story? If you score low on the SAT, you have to have a higher GPA. If you score high on the SAT, you can have a lower GPA and still be admissable. Now, I'm not saying that the standards aren't absurd, but it's not quite as bad as you make it out to be. ;) Besides, I could give two craps about how well college football players perform academically. I like being entertained on Saturdays, and if that's what it takes, that's fine with me. The only people being hurt are the players themselves, and if they really want to, they can take care of themselves. There are always those student athlete standouts that actually major in something real and do well. If the others want to halfass and throw away their shot at a college education, that's their problem.

That scholarship money doesn't come from some pool of cash that is available to every student. Without college athletics, that scholarship money wouldn't even exist in the first place. So, they really aren't taking anything away from you. ;)

While I don't like the new standards, I don't think it will matter much.

Big powerhouse schools (say Florida, Nebraska, and Miami in football, and UNC, Kansas, and Kentucky in BBall) already allow in questionable "student" atheletes who can barely sign their name, may or may not stay 4 years, and constantly get "tutored." It's not like this hasn't been happening all along. Kevin Garnett is one of the few examples of someone who was even too stupid for this program.

Has the University of Cincinati ever graduated a starting player on it's Basketball team? You think OJ Simpson ever atteneded a class when he was playing at USC? They ought to just forget the charade and pay College Athletes!

Tony Cornheiser (ESPN's Pardon the Interruption) says Cincinati should change their mascot from Bearcats to Thugs. :)

They may be the worst "academic" athletic program in the country.

I've always thought that players that fall below the academic threshold should be allowed to attend school and compete. there should be a professional sports curriculum for them. It would consist of simple real world subjects of concern for professional athletes. It would teach them basic skills and be graded on a pass/fail basis. Then they get to play, we get to watch, and they get a degree. But it's not of much use.
