I'm really noobish at this stuff. But can you keep using ATi's latest drivers with these kinda of cards where PCB , etc is all custom without having like the coolers sudenly run at 100% all the time?

Well looking again at those 85 watts , that is after a serious overclok not?

One thing to note is that the HAWK uses 10 Watt more in idle then a normal one because idle keeps memory at full speed.

http://www.techreport.com/discussions.x/18429 nice side note , that this might have been the reason for it.

I wonder how something like that crossfires with a stock 5770.
I've seen some 5770 + 5750 benchmarks that show performance in between a 5770x2 and 5750x2 performance so I'm hopeful a slower stock 5770 wouldn't slow one of these down.

I like this trend MSI has been doing with their video cards.

The Lightning HD5870 is a good example of how they have been breaking away from the ATX form factor.

Yea and that gtx 260 that was faster then the gtx 285 and the 4890.
Nice cards.

4870 is what forced Nvidia's hand with the gtx260-216, and that was win some/lose some with the 4870. It never beat the 4890. What a liar.

The PCB on the HD5870 is wider than normal and it has 2x8 pin power connectors (375 watts total)

Maximum spec for ATX is only one 6 pin and one 8 pin. (300 watts total)

The HD 5770 Hawk should be in the office on monday. Now I just need the green light to poor some LN2 on it, and see what it really can do. 1050/5660MHz on air is pretty damn sweet. I bet it can do 1350+ on LN2.

You gonna review it? I for one would like to read that review with LN2 and some more overvoltage.:D

That's the plan. Gotta order some ln2 though, set things up, so it's probably going to be next saturday, or the one after that. I'm actually hoping we will get a HD 5870 Lightning too, which would be even better ^^

It's nice to see some interesting non-reference designs for the 5xxx series. Hopefully we'll see more soon!

It looks like 40nm Silicon is consistently good up to about 1000Mhz-1050 Mhz on air.

This begs the question when will MSI release a Lightning version of HD5970? That Video card has two of the highest bin Cypress Cores for only 50% more money than a single HD5870. Unfortunately, it appears to be power limited for clocks beyond 935 Mhz.

If MSI supplies 2x8 pins, proper power circuitry and cooling (possibly by making the video card wider) 1000Mhz-1050 Mhz clocks might be possible on HD5970. Worst case scenario a water block would need to be added.

oh, well you see, I was talking about an OC'd 4890. ::rolls eyes::

gtx260 does not beat the 4890, no way, no how.

performance increase was nice just wished they compared it to 4870 and 4890 . I bet it beats the 4890.
