New MSI 4850 OC, dissapointing Crysis bench score

I just got my new MSI 4850 OC setup on a E7xxx@3.5/Vista 32bit/4gb ram. Overclocked it bit more to 700/1200 using ATT. Using Catalyst 9,5.

The one thing dissapoints me is the Crysis Benchmarking 1.05 score. Even with the OC running the following:
DX10, 1280x1024, No AA, Game Quality: High.

got just 39.24 FPS. I sort of hoping for more so I can use 4xAA on it but doesn't look like there's a chance with this score. I have to say nv cards probably would do better on this game.

Anyone here who has a OCed 4850 confirm this score is normal?

Crysis is absolutely brutal on graphics cards and even on my GTX285, I stick to 1600x1200 with 2xAA along with reduced detail levels to get playable scores. Also the island benchmark is artificially high so when you hit the snow sections, your scores will plummet.

I don?t even run everything on high with my card because with my CPU at 3 GHz (stock), I?m still massively limited by my video card.

I don?t think you?re CPU limited, but in case you are, an easy test is to increase your AA to 4x or even 8x. If you see a performance drop, you?re GPU limited, If you don?t, you?re CPU limited.

What did you expect? You wanna play you gotta pay.

I have a evga gtx 280 I have majorly oc'ed. I get like 12200 3dmark vantage gpu score. I also have my Q9400 running at 3.75(use to be 4.0 but it was unstable). I run crysis at 1920x1080 very high 8x+Q. Not sure whats the Q for?

Sorry to hear cards not what you were hoping for. I know trying to run Crysis to its potential can be an expensive proposition.

Yup it's normal. You need a a card 2x fast as GTX 285 to play Crysis comfortably.

I really doubt about this, if you are using only one 280 GTX. Maybe when you're forcing 8X AA from the Nvidia control panel, the game turns it off, otherwise it will just crawl with 8XAA, even if you have 2X280 in SLI.

I think I will rerun the bench today as per several recommendations with 2xAA and 4xAA, I don't think I'm cpu limited since at 3.5 the E7200 is like a stock e8400. But heck, I was expecting more from this card. oh a quick question, does the crytek engine use quads? I mean I didn't think many game uses quads but I could be wrong. that would mean I am indeed cpu limited.

Another problem I have noticed with this card, maybe the case for all 48xx line is that it really runs hot!! not as hot as my older 8800gt/256 but still very hot. Initially when I ran 700/1200 using FurMark in burn mode, it just crashes when the temp exceeds 72C. So I had to do a little creative thinking and I managed to surround the main heatsink with 2x120mm fan, that dropped the temp 7-8 to 64/65C and it went stable after that. I wonder how you guys deal with the heat issues?

CPU isn't going to make that much of a difference but you will gain 1 or 2 fps at that setting.

FUR makes any card hotter by 10C. I don't think it's a good for testing stability as no game will run it that hot.

Yup it turns AA off. You have to use in game controls to force AA.

GTX 28x and Crysis very high still no no at 1920x. Maybe 1280x1024 resolution.

Come on guys. I am 28 years old have a good paying job, wife, house, 2 new cars. I have no reason to lie on some computer forum. I'm not some 15 yr old punk popping his zits watching porn. I run crysis on my 42" toshiba lcd tv at 1920x1080 8x Q very high settings. It sometimes gets choppy but for the most part runs great. I use in game settings to set graphics. I use to have to use 1920x1080 2x very high before I oc'ed my card. I did get 10,800 3dmark vantage before oc now I'm getting 12200 score. I bought an evga gtx 260 216 before this card and it wouldn't run at 1920x1080 so I used evga trade in program to get 280. The 280 gives me my 1920x1080 very high settings I wanted. If the 280 wasn't doing the job (1920x1080 very high) I would have the 295 right now.

Nobody says you're lying. Just that there's something wrong with the settings, cause no way can Crysis run remotely fine at FullHD with V High and AA 8xQ on a single OCed GTX280 (unless it's running like 4GHz on the core alone - and even then probably not ;)). There's absolutely no setup on the market right now that can run Crysis (or Warhead) maxed out at 1920x1080. Here's an example from Xbitlabs. Single GTX280 gets 15.8FPS average with AAx4 :) 2 GTX280s in SLi get a "whooping" 24.9 - still nowhere near smooth, even with the blur used in Crysis. And you're saying you have AA 8xQ :p

As for the OP, nice midrange setup there. Don't expect wonders though, especially in Crysis.

EDIT: The Xbitlabs article is running a Core i7 965EE - the absolute champ in the CPU market :)

Not sure what the deal is? Does the game run at DX9 default. I've never went in and enabled DX10. Do you even have to or does it run Dx10 automatically? Thats the only thing I can think of.

It'll default to DX10 in Vista/7 with a GPU that's capable of it. Also, the "very high" options will be grayed out under DX9, so it sounds like you are in DX10. The only thing I can think of is that maybe AA isn't being applied properly/at all, or you have a much higher tolerance for low framerates than most people.

It could be framerate tolerance for sure. For example, I played Crysis when it first came out on a P4 2.8 (Prescott, no HT) and a 6600gt (AGP baby!). While there were parts that literally almost slowed to a crawl for a few seconds, I found it to be "playable". I've noticed that Crysis and Warhead are much easier to deal with at lower FPS than pretty much any other shooter I've played.

ok I reran the test with 2xAA and 4xAA, it really hits my card hard, barely playable, considering the lows are like 15fps, I doubt it will be feasible to use these in game settings.

try dx9, nyker. theres also configs called "DX9 Very High on the Cheap" that will give you a 30% boost and look the same...

Just forget about AA. Use the highest settings that gives you playable frame rates : a combination of very high/high with some settings on medium.

I'll give it a shot. I never thought a year ago I couldn't play this game, now I still couldn't. I think they must have overestimated on the progess of gcards when they wrote this game. anyways. thanks for the tip.

With the rig in my sig, I can run Crysis @ 33fps @ 16x12 all high, dx10 on the benchmark. Crysis plays good down to about 24fps. If you don't dip below that, then it plays pretty good, until you get to either the snow, or the carrier. Then it can get ugly quick. Your 4850 should be able to keep pace with my card pretty easy. What do you get when you run the cpu benchmark, all high at 800x600? Also, use edge AA on Crysis, its looks good, and you get much better performance out of it.

Well, to be totally honest, Crysis is more of a "proof of tech" demo. It's good for testing system stability, and it's a so-so benchmark, but as a game it sucks.

nyker, run more than 1 loop when you use the benchmark. The flyby moves quickly and stutters when it loads stuff from disk on the first run, so the second and later runs will have higher framerates.

i was able to play crysis with everything at very high with 4x fsaa at 1280?1024 with no issues with my rig in my signature. but with edge blur looks better and runs faster.
