Hey all,

So I had a pretty bad spill into a ditch back in late Jan of this year and it totally messed up both my 2011 Trek Cobia stock wheels. I was wondering if I should just have it trued and then ride on it again (nothing big... just moderate trails) or just buy some new wheels instead?

Does anyone know if wheels body integrity can be less reliable after some hard abuse? Also, any recommendations on decent wheels that don't cost an arm and leg? I was thinking of spending $400 max on both wheels.

How bad are they? Is it both wheels or only one?

I'd take it to a bike shop and have them look at the wheels to see if there are any fractures in the hub or rim first to see if it is even safe to use.

Yeah both are pretty banged up. I had a 30+ mph spill into a ditch causing my left hand ligaments to tear from all my digits (where the carpal meets up with the metacarpal joint wise). So, any recommendations then on some decent wheels for under $500?

Ouch! That sucks.

JensonUSA has some pretty good deals on mtb wheels right now.

I like the Easton wheels because they seem to be pretty stout, they are stiffer than the flexy OEM wheels my bike came with, they are lighter and they roll better. I also like the silent freewheel.

Great for XC but could also be used for racing or training.

I have a 29er and was wondering if all 29" wheels were the same? I'm not sure if it fits my 2011 Trek Cobia or not. Kind of like how car wheels are?

Not all are the same. Attachment of hub to bike can vary, as well as width of rear hub (front hub width can vary too, but that's rare). Do you have normal quick release attachments? Or something like a 15mm or 20mm front axle?

But I'd start with the bringing the wheels to your bike shop so they can inspect and tell you if truing is the way to go.

Front is probably 9mm quick release, rear is probably 10x135mm. That is pretty standard on entry-mid level mountain bikes, that is what my 2013 Giant has.
