'New' Moto X from ebay, turns on to AP fastboot mode? HELP?

Just got a moto x off ebay, seller claimed it was new but when I tried to power up, first the battery was low (fine). But then it turned on to this black screen, that says

AP Fastboot Flash Mode (s)

on the bottom it says -

fastboot reason: key pressed.


Is it possible to get into this fast boot mode without the phone being rooted? (it is/was plugged into a laptop when I tried to power it up).

Usually if you push one of the volume buttons with the power button it boots into fastboot mode.
Rooting has nothing to do with fastboot, its basically a debug screen where you can flash images.

Thanks. I googled more and found a video on youtube. never managed to do that on a different phone.
