does getting a new motherboard mean i would have to get a new case because im running a compaq presario 5300?

Depends, Some motherboards are larger than others and depending on your current mobo / case setup it may or may not fit. That stock case probably doesn't offer a whole lot in cooling other than one intake fan and the power supply fan, Most people will reccomend getting a new case with a good power supply.
