If you get a new motherboard, I highly recommend re-installing windows (clean install!!). A lot will change with a new motherboard, such as the chipset and all sorts of other minor chips that come installed on the motherboard. You might end up having all sorts of weird problems if you don't do a clean install.

Start in save mode clean/remove the old driver's(chip set,net work, ETC), unless its a similar mother board you will have to reactivate the license on Windows. There is no need to re-intall windows unless its very old.

I'd still recommend a clean install as removing old drivers might not always clean the registry perfectly and you'll have all sorts of garbage left behind.

Clean install is exactly as the name implies and involves the reinstallation of the operating system which wipes the drive clean of everything so you can start over.

Sometimes that works. But just as often, it does not. You might even get a blue-screen when attempting to boot the new system with the old HDD.

I strongly advise backing up your essential data before trying this.

Edit: Also, if your old rig was a branded OEM rig, and the new rig is a custom-built one, the Windows license is not valid, and cannot be transferred. It will come up as "not genuine", and stop working.

OP, you obviously came here looking for advice, so I would suggest you take note of the suggestions already posted as to why you should re-install windows for a new mobo...

CPU's, chipsets, bios versions/functionality, north/southbridges, hardware-specific drivers..etc etc....they all change regularly. Sometimes the changes are minimal, other times they are quite significant....all of which could cause major issues with an older Windows install that is bloated & full of old registry keys, outdated kexts etc etc...

If this happens you will spend way more time attempting to pinpoint & correct the issues than you will if have to reinstall windows & some data/files....
