New motherboard + new CPU = Reformat?

I've orded a new board and processor and am just wonder if I'll need to reformat to install them. I know the system devices all have to be reinstalled but I have a somewhat vague memory of being able to merely delete the enum key in the registery and reboot, then windows would reinstall those devices. Although another fact that I do recall is that this specific key is Win95/98/ME only.. anyone know of a similar way of doing this in 2000?

I consider myself new, but I would think that you should clean install - unless you want to worry about bugs later on...

You can't kill the ENUM key in Win2K.

Usually I recommend a reformat in this situation for various reasons. There's a FAQ coming soon.

I just upgraded my w2k pro about 4 months ago, added a new motherboard & processor. I did not have to do a clean install, the system seemed to work fine (I had the same devices/peripherals though).

I went from a bx mobo and p3 to a p4 with 845d mobo. I tried doign this without reinstalling winxp and I got nothing but bsod everytime I would boot up. I formated and reinstated and everything is fine now

considering that you'll be using new CMOS info along with possibly different IRQ's, I'ld recommend a clean install. Just a new cpu and you could get by w/o a clean install, but considering a new mb also, it'll save you headaches down the road.

If you had an older system and Windows 95/98 I'd say just plug in the new stuff; I sometimes swap hard drives between different systems ranging from Pentiums to AMD K6-3's and they install the appropiate stuff just fine.

It sounds like he DOESN'T want to format...

So DON'T format! just put the board in and see what happens.. if it works.. Great!

If it doesn't, then try to just run Setup again, sometimes that is good. I put a new Mobo in on my XP Pro system, I just ran Setup and let it install Windows again.. It's worked Great! I didn't have to reinstall any of my Apps or games... All my origianl settings were kept.

If it's a no-go after all of that, then format..

BTW, I have done the same thing with Windows 2000... You really don't have to format and start from scratch... If your system is stable now, you should be Good to Go!

Just as clarification basically I had planned to reformat last weekend and repartition everything, etc.. but I didn't get my new board by then so I just wanted to know if 2k had an easy way to do the same thing removing the enum key in 98 would do so that I could get all that done now and not have to do it again when the new board arrives. Just planning ahead, I'll just reformat once I get my new board and processor.. it'll be a nice day of formatting/partitioning/reinstalling/ghosting. 🙂
