Hi guys. I'm probably about to buy a X800GTO^2 in a couple days and am wondering what kind of motherboard would be good. I used to follow this stuff but recently just havent had the time.

What current motherboard would be good for overclocking, doesnt have a crazy loud chipset fan (or something that i could replace) and still supports IDE HD's?

I'm thinking of a MSI Neo 4 board, based on the reputation that the Neo 2 had at overclocking, as i do need a suitable board. SLi capabilities are not required at this point in time, just a solid stable platform. I currently have a Asus A8V deluxe Rev2, and I've found that it cant hold my overclock through summer (Hong Kong) and thats only at 2.45 ghz on my 3200+ I'm pretty sure this chip will do 2.6 on a board that is capable of taking it up to there, and I do have the cooling too (XP90).

*I dont think chaintech boards are available over here.

I dont beleive that the MSI boards are good overclockers for nForce4. You should really be looking at the DFI board for that, or the EPoX 9NPA+Ultra. Just check the motherboards sticky at the top and glance through it...

Hmm yeah that DFI Lanparty is really a great board, and i can get it here, although i dont know if its worth paying for since ill be using a ATi card with it. but yeah definately if i were going nvidia i would choose the DFI boards. ill have a look at their other offerings.. thanks for the info, and i did have a look at your guide prior to posting this. only got about halfway though

Why would that matter? An ATI X800XL works fine in my OC'd DFI LP SLI-DR board.

well i figured i could shave a few bucks off since i didnt need that extra SLi slot and get a mobo with only the one pcie one. anyhow, ive bought a Seagate 160GB SATA NCQ 8mb cache HD, x800gto^2 and got myself a DFI Lanparty ultra-D board.. havent installed yet. being used as incentive to finish my extended essay here. urgh. hahah well better get back to it!

I would avoid the MSI K8n Neo 4 Platinum SLI. There are many issues with this board. You might want to check the MSI forum to get a handle of the same recurring problems that users with this board are having. If you do get an MSI board try and get the latest production model that allegedly cures, the x2 problem, dual SLI fit problem, and creative soundblaster/PSU problem. Even the latest bios does not fix the numerous lingering issues with this motherboard. Purchase only at your own risk.

The MSI Neo-4 Platinum and Neo4-F boards are great overclockers (look at my sig for instance), but the SLI version as mentioned is buggy . . .

The DFI boards are obviously the best when it comes to overclocking but if you want a rock solid board try something like the Asus A8N SLI Premium

Would the newer sound chip provided on the dfi board be better than my aged soundblaster audigy? higher quality audio?

No . . . even a 24-Bit Soundblaster Live! would be better . . . also a soundcard would use less CPU than the integrated solution . . .
