Just finished rebuilding system with Shuttle An35-ultra motherboard and most of it went ok but when it attempts to install drivers for the onboard sound, ethernet and PCI bus they cannot be located on the win 98 cd where it says they should be. I downloaded all windows updates got the most recent nvidia drivers from nvidia but nothing is working. HELP!

Also when the system boots it says Primary IDE 80 conductor cable missing, but all the drives are operational should I be concerned abvout this as well.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Sorry for the second post but driversand files it says that are missing are:

wdmaud.drv
sysaudio.sys
ntkern.vxd
icmp.dll
inetmibl.dll
and others that it looks for when running the nvdia update

Your motherboard drivers will not be on the Win98 CD. You should have received a CD with the motherboard. Or, you can go to Shuttle's website and download them from there.

As far as the 80 conductor message, make sure you are using the 80 wire cable versus the older, 40 wire cable. You should be able to tell the difference by looking at them. Assuming you have the right cable, you need to have the blue connector on the motherboard, the gray connector to a slave drive and the black connector to the master drive. Make sure your drive(s) are jumpered correctly for where they are connected on the cable.

I'm fairly sure ntkern.vxd is somewhere on the Windows CD; I don't remember what it does, but I know I had trouble with it awhile ago. I'll try to find files on my Win98 CD. Which version do you have? I've only got Win98SE, and I don't know if the files will work with first edition.

For your chipset drivers, get them here.
And just checking the chipset driver package, those files are not included in the package - I'm pretty sure they are, or rather, should be, in the Win98 folder on the Windows CD.

Ah, yup, they're all compressed within the CAB files in the Win98 folder. In my Win98SE CD, there is one file in the driver16.cab file; the rest are in different files.
So if you can, direct Device Manager to your Win98 folder on the CD when it asks, and it should be able to find the files it needs.
However, I noticed that you said your PCI bus is disabled. Check Explorer and make sure your CD drive is even visible.

They may be, but why would he want most likely older versions? I'm assuming he meant to type AN35N-Ultra.

If there is an older board AN35-Ultra that I am flat wrong.

Sorry i should have typed AN35N-ultra.
I did try to point the device manger to the cd drive but to no avail. When using windows explorer I do see that there are many compressed files on the disk. Is there any way to uncompress them or should I do a system recovery?

Thanks for the cable input, stupid me put a 40 pin in accidentally. Problem fixed.

Won't be on the 98 CD. Will be on the CD that came with your MB. Or else dl from Shuttle or from Nvidia.

Are you using a Hard Drive with Win 98 on it from the previous system?

Here's the link for the drivers for your board from Shuttle. Chipset Driver is the one you want for your O/B sound and NIC.

But, do you not have the CD for your board, or, is it asking you to insert the Win98 Disk during the driver install?

If that's the case, Jeff7 has given you the information you need. The driver installation utility should be smart enough to find the files it needs. But I have seen many times where this is not the case. If not, then you will have to direct them to where they reside on the Win98 CD. Jeff7 has told you where they are. Although, you may have to drill down through the folders until you find ones named Sound or Audio or Network or something that will be real obvious. Then, you may have to open a lot of subfolders until the file is found.

If you're not finding what you need in these posts, please tell us what steps you have taken to get where you are right now.

We're all guessing here to some degree.

Older versions - I assume you mean the files on the Windows CD? Because the files he listed are not in the driver package for the motherboard. They are Microsoft's files. I checked both the driver file package from nVidia, and my Windows CD image. The nVidia package does not have "wdmaud.drv, sysaudio.sys, ntkern.vxd, icmp.dll, or inetmibl.dll. They are all in the Win98 folder.

Bradul - download WinRAR. It can search the CAB files, and decompress from them. If you need to, decompress every single file there (you can select multiple files for search and decompression from within the program) to a temp folder.
I really don't know why Windows isn't finding the files it needs though. It should look at \Win98, and see immediately where what it needs is.

Although, you may have to drill down through the folders until you find ones named Sound or Audio or Network or something that will be real obvious. Then, you may have to open a lot of subfolders until the file is found.
There aren't even in any subdirectories within \Win98 though - the CAB files are right there in it, just named things like drivers11.cab, and so on. Windows should be smacking it's forehead and saying "duh, of course, they're right there!" But for some reason, it isn't.
