I'm changing the monitor on my wife's computer from a 1280x1024 to a new 1920x1080 widescreen. What do I need to do in order to do this properly? Should I change a Display setting on the computer before shutting down and adding the new widescreen?

Just shut the pc down and do the swap then reboot and set the correct resolution. Windows may even set the right resolution on it's own

Also, your video card (drivers) needs to be able to support the resolution.

Shut down computer, unplug old monitor, hook up new monitor, start up computer, change to desired resolution. The new monitor will be able to display 1280x1024, it will just look ugly, so there's no need to change anything before.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm just paranoid about damaging things. In retrospect I feel pretty retarded now for having asked such a silly question.
