New Monitor Help

OK, so It's been a long time since I had to choose between a FW-900 (still wish I'd bought one of those monsters) and a 2405FPW. I've only purchased one monitor since, my current Dell U2711, but at that time, monitor shopping wasn't NEAR as hard as it seems to be today, and choosing a brand was as simple as, "You get what you pay for."

Anyway, I think it's time for an upgrade. I keep reading about how awesome 144 Hz is for gaming and smoother framerates, but 4k is the future. Last I went monitor shopping, the Korean import panels weren't an option, so I'd like some info as to which brands are generally considered worthy purchases and which to avoid like the plague. The prices on our import options are certainly attractive. Don't really have a brand preference. It's just my past purchases for personal use have lead me to buy Dell monitors.

Guess you guys need some more info for good recommendations, huh? I mostly play RPGs and adventure games, and love my eye candy. I have developed a huge dislike for a lot of the 2D "retro" indie garbage that Steam pumps out these days, and tend to play more graphically demanding games such as The Witcher 3, but I also do some light FPS gaming from time to time in The Division, or even Rise of the Tomb Raider. I spend almost equal time viewing HD media as I do gaming, so it is important to me that whatever monitor I choose also be suitable for watching movies.

As for the rig itself, I currently have a R9 290X with plans to upgrade "soon." I have no idea whether I'll go team red or team green this time though. I might wait on the big chips to launch or at least for more info to come out about them before pulling the trigger on a new GPU; then again, the upgrade itch may be too much to bear.

Sorry I got so long winded here. The more I look, the more I can't decide, so I have some questions.

Is 4K worth it? (I realize my current setup will not drive a 4K monitor, but it should, at 60 Hz anyway, after the GPU upgrade)

For someone who does little FPS or Twitch gaming, is 144Hz 1440p going to make as much of a difference over the higher resolution of 4K?

Finally, with ~$500 - 700 as a target price, what monitor would you recommend? I have plenty of desk real estate, so don't be afraid to go big. I'm happy with 27" but could certainly appreciate a larger screen size for movie watching.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I'm not a fan of the curved models. I like my 2 monitor setup for simultaneous gaming and web browsing without having to tab out.

Comes down to preference. If high refresh sounds like something you want, then you are limited to 1440p and below until DP 1.3/1.4 panels come out. With a 290X, no, 4K is not worth it IMO. You'll have to dial back the settings, 2560x1440 is a much more appropriate resolution for the 290X.

As far as recommendations, there's really 3 options I would recommend:

-27" 144Hz 2560x1440 Freesync (MG279Q (IPS) or XG270HU (TN): both can usually be had for $400-550)

-34" 60Hz 3440x1440 ultrawide (34UM94-P, 34UM95, U3477PQU, ACER variant: most expensive: between $500-700)

-27"-32" 60Hz 2560x1440 (BL3200PT, PB278Q (old), S32D950T, other ASUS/ACER/BenQ 1440 variants $350-600)

Of course, if you would like 4K that is completely up to you. 4K looks fantastic (provided you purchase a 27" AHVA model and not the 28" TN Inno variants). They can be had between $375-600.

Read reviews on sites like tftcentral.co.uk and pcmonitors.info for panels your are interested in.

Side note, the PG279Q and XB271HU/XB270HU are solid panels but only support G-Sync.

Thanks for the recommendations. I think I'll have to sleep on this one before deciding, but that MG279Q looks like a really nice option, and is most likely the panel I'll go with. Any reason to choose TN over IPS these days? My current primary monitor is an IPS panel, and I really like the color on it.

Not really, only for the most extreme cases. If you find yourself so equal with the competition in competitive play that the 1-3ms of response time you lose by having an IPS panel is going to matter, then maybe. Again, the MG279Q/XB270HU tie or exceed the PG278Q in average response times. There are some cases where the IPS panels struggle to keep up in terms of pixel transition (shown in the TFTCentral review). But you would really be splitting hairs at that point.

Make no mistake, the new high refresh IPS panels are top notch.
