New Monitor, Custom Refresh Rates, and My Concerns.

I formally used a Dell m781s, and I was handed down a Compaq FS7550 in mint condition.

The m781s supported 1024x768 @ 100hz (my desktop settings).
It seems the FS7550 only supports 1024x768 @ 85hz.

There's that little box that says "Hide Unsupported Refresh Rates" which I just clicked off, then upped it to 100hz. When I hit the menu button, it does indeed say I'm running at 100hz. Cool.

What dangers am I putting my monitor in by doing this?

Furthermore, if anyone could finally explain to me the correlation between video card FPS output and monitor refresh rates? Maybe give me a link? I have the general idea, but I want to know the details.

Thanks, guys!

Not sure if you could damage your monitor by cranking the refresh beyond "supported" modes but I'd leave it at 85hz or whatever is close in your supported resolutions.

Unless your vid card can crank out more than 85 fps, pushing your monitor up to 100hz refresh won't give you any better picture as far as I know. Most people, not all, will tell you that the difference between 85-100 hz (or fps) can't be detected by your eyes anyway. Unless you had some kind of problem with your picture at 85hz, I'd go back to it.

Check this out.

my video card can definitely push that kind of FPS... that's why it concerns me. Thanks for the link, I'll read it once I get done playing KOTOR ;D

Generally, outside of gaming, you'll want to use the LOWEST flicker-free refresh rate you can, probably 85hz. Increasing the refresh rate beyond that just causes the image (especially noticeable with text) to become more blurry.
