I am going to buy an internal modem.
Is there any real difference between the modems available on the market?

The main difference is whether you go for a "Winmodem" or a "true hardware" modem. For more information on that look here.
Other than that, I believe there are now V.92 modems on the market. The V.92 designation doesn't add any performance. It just enables you to put the modem "on hold" while you answer an incoming call. I think your ISP has to support it though.
