For a bit of background, I have broadband through TWC. For a while, I had been using an older modem, a Thomson DWG875 because I thought I needed it to support VOIP functionality. Anyways, it was working fine. Shortly after Google Fiber announced its intent to move into my market, TWC sent me a letter letting me know that my speed was going to increase from 20mbps to 100mbps. I did a quick bit of research and realized that this old modem was only DOCSIS 2.0 and I would probably want to move up to a new model to ensure I got the fastest speeds. I ended up buying the Motorola SB6141, which I believe is a very common and well-reviewed device.
I use an Airport Extreme that I bought about a year ago. However, with only 4 ethernet jacks, I needed more and had daisychained a Netgear 8-port gigabit switch as well. All of this worked very well with the old modem. Very rarely (every other month-ish) did I need to do a reboot/restart, but when I did, things quickly came back online and worked fine.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. Modem shows up, I call TWC to provision the modem and modem grabs a signal / is online. However, something has gone wonky between modem and router, and no devices anywhere are getting signal. Apple software is giving me errors about DHCP issues and DNS servers. I tried setting new DNS servers (like Google's) but that didn't work. I tried restarting over and over and wound up spending a couple of hours slamming my head against the table. Finally, I unplugged everything and then restarted modem and router, and voila. I plugged everything back in, and it all started working again.
What I realized is that if I reset the modem and router, the router won't seemingly connect to the internet if I leave the ethernet cable from the switch plugged into the router. I have to unplug the switch, and restart both modem and router, let them connect and then plug the switch back in. Any thoughts on why this would be happening?
Also, my internet will quit working now about every other day, requiring a restart (per above directions).
It seems like this new modem has introduced some strange ghost into the mix, but it makes no sense. Why won't this setup work with the switch plugged into the router? Why is my internet dropping out so much more frequently now?
Thanks in advance for any and all help!
