EDIT: SOLVED THE ISSUE.

So I was dealing with speed issues for a few weeks while I waited for an Xfinity technician to get to me and they narrowed it down to my modem finally giving out after 10+ years of use. The only place in my area that sold modems compatible with Xfinity had a Netgear Nighthawk CM1200. I was able to get it connected and working for my PC with an ethernet cable and the Xfinity tech on the phone tried to walk me through setting up a new Wifi name/password but none of his suggestions were working (like typing 10.0.0.1 in the address bar) and said I'd have to contact Netgear in order to get it set up. I did that today and they told me I had to contact Xfinity to get it set up. Called them back and they tried more of the same which didn't work and ultimately told me it's only something Netgear can do... I do also have an ASUS AC1900 Wifi router that I had plugged into my old SB193 modem that I used for my game consoles and phones but even that's not working - presumably because I haven't set up a new Wifi network yet.

I'll admit, I am half-decent with computers but networking is not my thing and considering it's been over a decade since I last set up my Wifi network and messed with any of this, I am pretty lost here. I was able to log into my modem using 192.168.100.1 but that only brings up a tiny square that tells me my cable connection is good. I don't see any options to create any networks and the guide that came with the modem is just a single piece of paper that only mentions how to connect the cables. I'm sure it's something incredibly simple but nothing I've tried has worked.

Edit: I should note that when I plug the router into my modem, my PC loses connection to the internet and I don't know why.

According to the manual, you should only use port 1 on the modem, unless you have router that have 2 WAN ports that can do link aggregation when you have internet service that's over 1 gigabits, then you can connect 2 cables from the router to the modem using port 1 and port 2.

==

Nighthawk CM1200 is just a wired modem and does not have wifi capability, how can you connect to it with SSID/password? You can only connect to a wifi router or wifi gateway with SSID/password combo.

And what is that 10.0.0.1 IP address? The IP address of ASUS router? In theory, just plug in your existing ASUS router WAN port behind new CM1200 port 1 and it should work like before after activation, nothing else to re-configure. Every thing should connect to ASUS wifi router. PC should not connect directly to the modem, it will completely being exposed to the internet.

Make sure you did activate your modem (around 9 minute mark)

This is where you lost me. No idea what WAN ports are or link aggregation. My Xfinity service is 1GB so there's that.

And what is that 10.0.0.1 IP address?
Something that the guy on the phone told me to type into the address bar to access my modem. It did nothing but given his incredibly heavy accent, I had him enunciate it twice just to make sure I heard him right. I told him the 192.168.100.1 gave me access to something and he was just as confused as I was.

So if I understand you correctly, I plug the ethernet cable into my ASUS router into port 1 and then connect the router's cables into the Netgear's first two ports? I'll give that a try and see what happens.

No. You connect ASUS router's WAN port (usually BLUE) to CM1200's port 1 (there are 4, don't use any other port) . CM1200 default IP is 192.168.100.1 . Xfinity level 1 tech support apparently does not have basic knowledge and didn't know what he was talking about.

Your wired PC and other devices can and should connect to ASUS router's any LAN ports (YELOW)

Ok. I'll give this a try. Apparently I've had it backwards or when I changed out the modem I completely forgot where everything was connected (more likely this is what happened).

Edit: I seem to have internet still while connected to the router and the WAN connected to the modem, but the Wifi says it can't get the IP address.

what wifi can't get IP address? Smartphone's wifi or PC's wifi? Check ASUS router's WAN IP address too. Post screenshots.

Phone and PS4. Those are the only things using the Wifi.

Check ASUS router's WAN IP address too. Post screenshots.
Once I figure out how to do this I'll post some screenshots.

Edit: Found out there's an ASUS app that allows me to set up the router from my phone. Going to try that as well alongside this and see if this works. I get the feeling the router wasn't set up properly and my old modem was functioning for the Wifi.

use PC's wired connection and visit ASUS's router's default IP address. According manual on the internet, the IP should be 192.168.1.1 if you didn't change it But check PC's adapter to confirm.

I've tried to enter the default address, the one shown for Default Gateway, and even tried to go to router.asus.com but nothing works. It says the site cannot be reached.

Looks like your PC is still connect directly to the modem, not ASUS router!

correct connection:

ISP -- coaxial cable --- CM1200 --- ethernet cable port 1 --- ASUS BLUE WAN port || any YELLOW LAN ports -- your PC and other wired devices

I assure you the ethernet cable is connected to the router and the WAN from the router goes to the modem port 1. Maybe restarting all devices might fix this issue?

I can take pictures of the setup if that would help as well.

Yeah, a restart of everything will help. Shutdown everything and then restart from modem.

a live picture will help too.

Show your router's internet connection page as well.

Yes I know everything is covered in dust. I live in the desert and I don't usually go near my router so that old desk gets neglected a lot.

I'll try to shut everything down and see what happens.

Well, I recommend replacing those cables with factory premade new ones, they look old.

But if it works, it works.

The gray one connected to my computer is very old but it's the only one long enough to reach my PC and modem. The white one is brand new.

Also, just restarted everything and now I have no internet.

Can you visit 192.168.100.1 and 192.168.1.1, and show the webpage screen shots of CM1200 modem and ASUS router?

And what mode the ASUS router is in? It should be in Wireless Router mode (the default)

It's asking for a login and password but admin//admin doesn't work. Admin//password just takes me back to the Netgear Genie site.

I'm getting the feeling like the router isn't even getting detected by my PC.

Edit. Just found something about Ethernet Port Aggregation being disabled in the advanced options. Going to try enabling it for Port 1 and 2 and see what happens.

This is 192.168.1.1. The Netgear Genie picture above is 192.168.100.1.

Router has had the WiFi enabled the entire time. No idea if it has different modes but both the 2.4 and 5GHz LEDs are lit up.

Edit: Enabling the Ethernet Port Aggregation gave me my internet back on my PC. Still no Wifi though...

Reset ASUS router and start over.
Unplug it or factory reset it? According to the manual, when I plugged the router into my PC, I should have gotten an installation wizard or been able to set it up through the browser on first opening but that never happened.

I appreciate you taking the time to assist with this. Give me a minute and I'll get it reset.

Holy shit it was as simple as factory resetting the goddamn thing. It popped up with the installation guide the moment I reset my PC. Just connected my phone and it's working just fine so I shouldn't have any issues connecting my PS4 as well since my phone is connecting. I never thought to just reset the stupid thing. Thanks a lot for this.

Edit just for anyone curious. All devices connect to the wifi with no issues. Huge thanks again to mxnerd.
