New Modem crashes Windows 98?

I purchased a barebones system to give to a friend. It had a formatted hard drive but with no operating system. I loaded Windows 98SE on it. It has a 300mhz AMD K-6,2 processor. I installed the modem, a Diamond SupraMax 56K PCI, and used the enclosed CD to install the drivers. I then attempted to enter my dial up network information for my current ISP to try it out. After entering the information and clicking on "connect" the computer crashes and re-boots. I tried this 2 more times and each time the computer just shut down and re-booted. There is no other software installed on the computer other than the freshley installed operating system. Any suggestions?
Regards

Been playing with it further and found that just clicking on modem "properties" in the control panel crashes the computer?

Take a look in your system properties and see if there are any red marked items.

type START - RUN - type in MSINFO32 and click on 'Hardware resources __ conflicts-sharing' -- what irq is the modem trying to use? Also look at 'Hardware resources __ ports' and see if the com port you're trying to use is there.

You might also try booting into safe mode, remove the modem from the device manager (and HFCmodem if its so equipped), shut down, and put the modem into a different slot.

Also, the bios may not have the necessary com port enabled

morkinva,
Thanks for your suggestions!! I will try that out. I moved the modem to a different PCI slot and it isn't crashing the computer now. Now however I get a error message that there is "no dialtone" even though you can here the dialtone? It just will not dial the numbers?

morkinva,
Yes there is a dialtone. I have poked around a bit and "discovered" that the modem and video card are using IRQ 11. Also the modem installed on COM 3. I don't think these two things are correct but have no idea how to correct the problem?
Thanks

I believe that would cause a problem if both video and modem were using the same IRQ.

If you aren't using a serial mouse, try disabling com1 and/or com2 in the bios setup screen. Hopefully the modem will grab a different com port (probably com1) and it would then get IRQ 4 via the plug and play feature.

I'm assuming there aren't any jumpers on this modem, and that it's plug and play.

morkinva,
Once again thanks for the tips. The motherboard has 4 pci slots and I had tried all but 1 of them. After trying that one and re-installing the modem and drivers windows assigned it to a different IRQ than the video card. Voila it worked. So I am happy and move along to installing the new sound card, a Hercules Fortissimo II. Went without a hitch till I installed the drivers for it and it promptly crashed thy system! It starts rebooting and then just starts over with the booting again. It finally just went into "safe mode". Not really sure what to do from here? Going to bed for tonight for one thing!
Regards

UPDATE.
Finally got the drivers to load and now Windows is running fine. No sound from the sound card as of yet. But at least I am moving along in the process. This is the last hardware that I have to add. So almost there! As a side note this thing is surprisingly quick for only having a 300mhz AMD chip. It does have a stick of 256 RAM so I am sure this helps. Should make a dandy first computer for surfing and word processing!
