Hello and thanks for taking the time to look at this, all help is appreciated.

The other night my wife's computers PSU (antec) went bad and it a flash and a bang her motherboard went with it. After 3 days and some new stuff from Newegg I reinstalled all the hardware and got the computer up and running. That was the easy part.

Now I thought I could just plug the network cable back in and be ready to rock...boy was I wrong.

D Link d-524 router being used non-wireless with my computer, the xbox 360 and the wife's compy all connected. My computer and the 360 are still working fine but I cannot get the wife's to work for the life of me.

I am at work now so all of this is from memory so please be patient

I can see my computer on her computer thru the network, but I cannot connect to the internet. I checked her IP addy and it is the 169.xxx.x.xx style so what I have gathered is that I am not getting a new IP address in the 198.xxx.x.xx range and this is the problem. I have looked at my router and dhcp is on and has a range set up.

I am racking my brain and spent about 4 hours working on it last night. Let me tell you running from my computer (in the basement) to her computer (on the 2nd floor) is a good workout but I would like the computer to work

Any help woud be great!

Thanks

Ty

Edit: I am silly so I forgot to let y'all know both machines are using win2k w. SP4

Are you sure you are seeing her PC from your PC. You maybe seeing the, for lack of a better word, remains of the old PC.

Check in Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and verify that the NIC is actually functioning, no red or yellow indicators.

Thanks for the reply PELarson-

The NIC is up and working properly as far as Windows is concerned. No red or yellow anywhere...only serene green.

Another thing is that if I connect directly to the modem I STILL cannot get on the internet...that bugs me.

Thanks

Ty

What mobo are you using? Try this: turn off the computer, pull the CAT5 cable out, turn off the PSU (if it has a switch), and then disconnect the power cord to the power supply. Wait about 10-20 seconds, and then plug in the power cable, turn the PSU back on, and plug in the ethernet cable.

Turn the machine back on and see what happens.

Well here is a little update.

Installed XP from scratch last night. Same problems as before. I tried to bypass the router to rule it out, but I cannot even connect to the internet thru the cable modem.

I am going to try my wireless card tonite and see if I can get any connection at all.

Thanks

Ty
