New mobo/cpu keeping old HDD - IDE

I am hoping this will be an easy transition. Cant afford to upgrade my hdd yet so I'm sticking with my old one. Of course I'll backup all my files just in case - but do I need to do anything or can I just plug in my old hdd and have it startup as if nothing new has happened? Windows should autodetect correct? thanks.

You will need to enter the BIOS when you first start the computer and set it boot sequency to boot from your CD/DVD drive. You need to do at the very least a repair install of Windows, and preferably a full install. After you do that the old HD should be fine.

You can also try uninstalling the ide and other mobo drivers and letting windows install standard drivers. And just plug in the old HDD. You mostly will have to do a repair.

If you do re-install without a reformat, mostly your data would be safe. Programs will need re-installing. You have to remember to create a temporary user as admin and make all other users limited. Also rename them if you intend to keep the same names with the new install.

My old p3-500 failed and I simply did a fresh install without a reformat on a sempron/via combination and could access all the data. Only problem I ran into was duplicate user names and re-installation of programs.

But I would advise a fresh install with format.

From personal experience, I've had ghetto installs work find, I've had ghetto installs that wouldn't even let me boot into Windows. I'll third the others: fresh install. Think about it this way: you're building a new system using untested parts. If you encounter a problem, do you want to add Windows to your list of troubleshooting? No, you don't 😉
