So my Asus A7N8X Deluxe died on me taking my R9700 Pro with it. What with the NForce 4 coming out soon im going to bite the bullet and go 64bit. I've already settled on the components (3500+, Asus A8N-E and a Rx800 XL) and i'll be upgrading from my Barton 2500+, Asus A7N8X Deluxe and R9700 Pro. My system has Windows 2000 Pro on it but i only just re-installed, roughly 4 months ago, and dont really fancy doing it again so soon. So the question is, is it really feasable to install the components, boot to safe mode, remove everything that needs removing (from device manager + drivers), rebooting and installing the new stuff? If it is could someone list the componenets i need to remove from device manager? If however it really isnt a good idea i will re install, its just a hassle i dont want when i dont have alot of free time. Cheers for any answers.

You really don't need to reinstall with WinXP/2K. Use a Repair Installation to reset the hardware information in your registry and you should be all set. There's an AT guide on this (see "guides" link at above right), or you can search for MANY threads on this topic.

So I can boot from the Win 2k CD and use the repair installation to reset my HD info? I'll read the guides in a bit though.

dunno if im really lucky, but i replaced the same 3 parts in my computer but i still didn't have a problem with the installation. i just put in the new parts, booted, windows took care of the rest.

just be prepared to re-install, who knows maybe you will be lucky too.

Well as long as you dont have anything TOO important on that hard drive, you should reformat. Reformatting isn't that big when it comes to replacing 3 parts. It's the safest thing to do.
