new mobo/cpu combo problems

I just put together a new system using a ECS K7S5A Motherboard / AMD Duron 950Mhz CPU combo that I found on the Hot Deals page. I bought the combo at Fry's B&M just in case I had to return it and Im starting to think that I may just have to that. I'm also using a new antec sx840 case that I bought which I know is AMD appoved.

I've got everything wire up correctly but when I boot up, all I get is a blank screen. I see the lights blink and I hear the HDD spinning but that's about as far as I can get. I also hear some beeping which I'm now wondering if it isn't some kind of warning.

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to trouble shooting, even though I have built several systems in the past with great results. Can somebody try to help me out with this one? I've gone through everything that I can think of and I'm getting nowhere fast....
 
The beeps are a code - they're trying to tell you what's wrong. The codes are different for each bios, but if you do a google search on bios beep codes, you'll find the info for your board. Most of the time, it means that either your CPU, RAM, or video card is not seated properly in the slot. Try the RAM and vid card first cause they're easy. Then search for the code definition before messing with the CPU and heatsink.
 
Answer...get a new cup - depending on how much you want to spend you can probably get a paper cup for a few cents at your local supermarket.

But seriously...this problem is almost always a short/grounding problem of some sort. Occasionally it turns out to be a bad CPU/mobo/memory/video card but that has never happened for me. The usual culprit is, as correctly stated, a poorly seated component, but also check for placement of the mobo spacers under/between the case and mobo. If one of these is touching the bottom of the mobo in a place where there is no hole it could be shorting out the board.

I finally fixed the problem but I'm not sure why it worked. I swapped out the G3 video card that I was using and installed and old V3 3000 card and everything worked fine. I had a feeling that the G3 just wasn't seated correctly so I put it back in and got the same results as before... nothing...

I'm wondering if there is a compatability problem or something. Both cards are AGP if that matters.

It was working great in my old rig but in the new one... nothing.
I put back it in my old machine this morning and it's working just fine...
