New MMORPG Mourning

Mourning sets out to change the general perception of the playability of MMORPG titles by veering off the well traveled path others have taken and by implementing many innovative ideas such as bloodlines, player generated questing systems, player driven economies, territorial conquest and the removal of player levels and classes.

Also there is permadeath and open pvp.

You can put a contract on someone's head. There are things that stop people from abusing it though.

Your character has a life span and your next character in that bloodline gains experience faster in areas that his "father" was good at.

Preorder is 30$ and you get to play in open beta that is going on right now.

Sounds a bit different, but it could easily fail since permadeath is not something mmorpg players like, and life span, could backfire badly. But if they get it right it will definetly be a very unique game 🙂

and my usual stuff regarding mmorpgs here, pimping out my game

player driven economies
done in eve online, soooooooo well

territorial conquest
done in eve online, pretty well done

You can put a contract on someone's head
done in eve online 😛

I like it.

I'll be checking this one out. I hope they realize what a massive undertaking what they are proposing is.

At work so no browse for me. But, can you tell me if they're using levels, a skill based system or something else? These ideas mean much less if they leaning on levels.

Czar, those things you're hyping are inconsequential without open pvp.

Malladine,
I recomend checking out their faq, alot of interesting concepts

How will fame enforce accountability?
Fame is a player accountability system. As PvP games often attract griefers (a person whose sole purpose in the game is to give you a hard time), it was decided that there must be a way to prevent griefing. There are certain actions that will give griefers a negative fame hit, but there are no negative fame hits if you are not the aggressor:
Killing newbies (very large hit)
Killing the same person repeatedly over a certain time period
Killing your allies. (dependant on the areas law)
In Mourning a player must live by the laws of the land or live with the consequences. Not every realm will punish you for killing, but others will make you kill on sight and you will be hunted down.

What will happen if a player's negative fame gets too high?
Negative fame will affect the player in numerous fashions as his fame decreases, griefing will eventually lead to a ban. There are a few events before this though:
Kill on sight to almost all realms, NPC?s
Gods rejecting your prayers
Character permanent death
Account temp ban
Account permanent ban

and

What are skills?
In Mourning there are no classes. Instead, Mourning brings you a unique version of the skill system where the usual grind of "leveling" has been done away with and greater character customization is allowed. MMORPG's often place great emphasis on mastering skills, but not so in Mourning. Mournings skills are not the "end all be all" of your character.
Your skills will allow you to effectively participate in combat but it will be your characters abilities that prove whether your character lives or dies. Mourning will provide a rich set of skills for players to choose from. All characters start out with the same basic abilities. A player selects a skill(s), starting off at the most common level of ability for that skill(s). Out in the world, the player will fight monsters/NPC's or other players to gain experience -- up until the point the player can no longer receive experience. It is then time to learn a new skill ability.

It is also notable in regards to leveling that there are plans to have getting a skill to 50 (in order to be viable in PvP) only take 10% of a characters lifespan (which would be 50 hours).

The Skill Pool: In the interest of doing away with treadmills the old skill degradation system was booted in favor of the skill pool. The skill pool is a character advancement system where you earn points you can put into certain skills. These are limited and you can only focus them into certain areas to have an effective character.

Active Skills: These are skills that can be raised by using them. This would include one handed sword, crossbow, etc.
Passive Skills: These are skills that cannot be raised by using them, to do so one must transfer skill points from active skills of the same school.

and btw, what did you mean with "Czar, those things you're hyping are inconsequential without open pvp. " ?

Nicenicenice!!! Thanks, i'll check that out.

Oh, didn't know EVE was open pvp, surprised. What I meant Czar, was that pvp in general is relatively meaningless without it being entirely open and preferably with 100% lootable "corpses" upon death. Can you loot parts from destroyed ships in EVE?

eve is as open as it gets, there is empire space 1.0-0.5 security rating where you get killed by npc police if you attack someone, then there is empire 0.4-0.1 security rating which means only gate turrets attack you for attacking people. Then there is the wastness of 0.0 where everything goes and the strongest group is king. Also in empire your corp can declare war on another corp and attack them anywhere you like, 1.0 to 0.0

When ships are destroyed some parts of the modules fitted are destroyed rest sits there ready for someone to pick up. Same goes with cargo. When you kill someone er get killed you get a eve mail stating where you were killed, how, by whom and what you lost. People have created kill mail parsers so people can rank themselves against others ( corps have their own kill site, not a universal thing ).

you can see here on the maps about the dynamics of the power struggle in 0.0, Stain Empire consists of around 4000 players, and Xetic Federation of around 5000 players, the biggest alliances at the moment.

And sorry everyone for always bringing up eve when I can 😛 This is just about the only advertisement eve gets, word of mouth.

I tried EVE and I would probably still be playing it if it weren't for the time-based skill system... I hate the idea that no matter how hard I play or how often I play I will always be a gimp to the players who joined before me. Pretty stupid system IMHO.

Sorry for going offtopic though...

Mounring looks pretty neat. I signed up for beta. I won't try it if I have to pay
