New mid/high end build

Hi all,

It's been more than a decade since my last build and I had gone out of the scene completely until I started reading up again over the past 3 months. Anyhow, here's the first draft of my new build. The main thing for me, and this is very important, is that it's silent. Hence why I went for the particular case and fan. Also, I might have gone a bit overboard with some components (e.g. graphics card) but I don't want to have to upgrade in 12months or so down the line. Feel free to rip into it and suggest alternatives.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for.
Gaming (RTS mainly) and general office/house duties.

2. What YOUR budget is.
About £1300 but I will move either way of that figure for sensible alternatives.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
U.K.

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
I'll happily do my price comparisons once I get a fixed set of parts list. A tenner here or there won't break the bank.

5. IF YOU have a brand preference.
Intel and Nvidia preferably

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
no current parts

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Would like to put a bit of overclock though nothing serious that requires loads of additional cooling or risk instability etc.

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
1920x1080 at the moment but might upgrade monitor in a year or so.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
In the next 3-4 weeks

10. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
I'll be getting a Windows 8 upgrade seperately

So here's my parts list...
CPU Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core £179.99
CPU Cooler Noctua NH-C14 £54.86
Motherboard ASRock Z87 Extreme4 ATX LGA1150 £149.11
Memory Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 £52.99
Storage Samsung 840 Pro Series 512GB 2.5" SSD £359.99
Video Card MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB £329.98
Case Nanoxia Deep Silence 1 ATX Mid Tower £95.00
Power Supply Corsair 600W ATX12V £59.35
Optical Drive Pioneer BDC-207DBK Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer £45.83
Total £1328

My main questions are these:
1) Do I need an ATX motherboard or will a mATX do?
2) If I do not overclock at all, would I be able to go for a cheaper CPU/mobo combination? Overclocking isn't a hard requirement.
3) Would I need additional fans in the case?

Many thanks for your help

Rob

1) Do I need an ATX motherboard or will a mATX do?
MicroATX gives you 2 expansions slots, without a standard ATX case and full PCI-e 16x for the 4th slot, and 3 of the prior conditions are met. Meanwhile, standard ATX Gives you 4-6, depending on those factors and the board. MicroATX can also look funny in a standard ATX case with a window.

Those are basically all the factors going into whether to get a standard ATX or MicroATX board, using a standard ATX sized case. The 3 bottom expansion slots you lose are the difference.

2) If I do not overclock at all, would I be able to go for a cheaper CPU/mobo combination? Overclocking isn't a hard requirement.
Yes. The i5-4670 and an H87 equivalent motherboard. If you won't want RAID or SRT, either, you can go down to a B85, too.

3) Would I need additional fans in the case?
It comes with 2 front fans and 1 rear fan, right? If so, no.

Thanks Cerb. I'll go the full hog and pick a Z87 with a full board. I plan to have this build around for another 5 years so might as well do it properly.

Any issues or suggestions about the parts I picked?

The motherboard seems a bit high.

I don't know where you're ordering from, but Scan is the only big UK store I know of, and it took me longer to compose this post than to find those. Does the ASRock Z87 Extreme4 offer something useful they don't? They claim more PCI-e, but are they using an extra chip for that, or automatically reducing bandwidth per slot?

A couple of thoughts:

- That motherboard is expensive for a single-GPU build. The Gigabyte Z87-HD3 is much more reasonable.
- I wouldn't drop a ton of money on 512GB SSD. Get a 128GB or 256GB version and ride the wave of falling NAND prices.
