Take a trip to the preview site for Microsoft's new homepage and you'll notice a nice shiny new layout with a fresher look and feel to it, provided you're using Internet Explorer.

In Firefox, Opera or a number of other third-party browsers the site simply redirects to the current homepage, even if you dress the browser up to appear to be Internet Explorer 6.0. Is this simply a preliminary bug-testing compatability period, or is there more method to Microsoft's madness?

The growth of third-party alternatives to Microsoft's once be-all-and-end-all browser has been phenomenal in the last few years, with recent reports claiming that a quarter of web users have switched to Firefox.

The exclusivity enjoyed by IE users isn't particularly significant but is certainly food for thought.

Man that site sucks in IE. The eyecandy is painfully slow to render. Mouseovers are delayed by a few seconds.

I was going to say it looks the same until I read the part where you said its only for IE users. I don't really care though. I probably spend about 3 minutes on any visit to microsoft, and thats usualy to download mediaplayer or some other ms app after a format.
 
IETab in Firefox renders it nicely.

But it's a HEINOUSLY poor design. Even worse than the previous iteration. And yes - load times are TERRIBLE on the mouseover items - even after viewing them previously. It seems as though the delay was INTENTIONAL.

Sempron 2400+ @ 2.0 ghz, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 9700 shouldn't be too slow to surf microsoft.com.

The old version works just fine.
 
It's a bit slow on my system (X2 3800+ @ 2.5, IE7), but I don't see why they couldn't fix it.

Doesn't happen to me either. I think Microsoft would know if their site was slow or not, and fix it if it was slow.
 
the delay is 1 second at best if not less.

But it is slower than the current site.

Its okay I guess. its still a beta anyhow.

I dunno why they are revamping it. they should wait till when vista comes out and do it.

I'll be the only who doesn't Microsoft-bash this morning and say that I think it looks fantastic. No slowness issues on my end, but I'm sure things will be optimized in the days/weeks to come.
 
Not really related, but why does every damn company in the world have to pictures of people making the most silly faces whenever they introduce something?
Talking about the scary looking chick on the frontpage right now, but it's more of a general question...
 
Renders fine in IE7 and there are no delays for mouseovers. 😕

That said, I've never really been a fan of MS's various site iterations and this is no exception.
