I'm guessing the perp suffers from a bad case of affluenza.

Fraternity punished - check (IMO should be kicked out of school altogether)

Perp charged - check - although IMO anyone involved with the "hazing" should be charged as well.

Maybe someday people will move past this nonsense.

Making an example of someone over a common behavior does not meaningfully change the behavior. I don't know if the evidence suggests Altamirano was negligent and highly remorseful as suggested by his defense nor whether the statute for aggravated assault requires consciousness of action. If that is the case, then I do think a lesser charge is the appropriate action for him. Prevention for events like this needs to happen at a much higher level.
