Mercedes-Benz is showing the production version of the 2012 C63 AMG coupe it plans to begin selling in the U.S. in September. By adding a two-door version of its souped-up small C Class car, the German car maker is trying to keep pace with rivals including Audi, BMW and Cadillac, all of which offer fast, flashy, overpowered coupes.

The new Benz also reflects a gradual comeback across the auto industry for two-door models that haven’t been very popular since the 1960s and 1970s, when they were known as personal cars.

Aimed largely at performance-obsessed single people and the midlife-crisis set, coupes like the C63, Audi S5 and Cadillac CTS-V Coupe try to make up for their lack of practicality with sleek, provocative styling that four-door sedans can’t match.

The new C63 coupe uses the same 6.3-liter engine as the much larger CL63 AMG and CLS63 AMG. The eight-cylinder power plant puts out 451 horsepower in standard trim and 481 horses if you order an option called the AMG development package. The package includes forged pistons and connecting rods, and a lightweight crankshaft like the one used in the company’s exotic SLS sports car.

The special parts save 6.6 pounds, make the engine more responsive and allow it to rev higher than the standard version. The extra power cuts the car’s zero-to-60 mph acceleration time to 4.3 seconds from 4.4 and boosts top speed to 174 mph from 155 mph for the standard AMG version. In both cases the car’s top speed is electronically limited.

This car looks fantastic and performance is pretty good too!

I raced a C63 AMG last year on the way home from work. When he got on it, it sounded so awesome! I thought it was a race motor transplant he put in it before doing any research. I think he was pissed he couldn't keep up on the freeway. He tried racing me in traffic after that, which I never do.

Looks hot.

Mmm, C63 AMG vs RS5 vs M3.

It is been a while since all 3 German manufacturers had something that goes toe to toe with each other.

I'll take the RS5 in white.

It's a very pretty car, and my favorite Audi by a good margin, but wooooooow.

MSRP $104,500 base! That's approaching vastly superior performers like the 911 Turbo and ZR1, not to mention Audi's own RS8 V8 (not as enthused about R8 though). Even the GT-R seems to solidly hand the RS5 it's ass in performance, although there's something to be said about the clean look of the RS5. The complete lack of a manual option isn't surprising, but somewhat disappointing.

Disappointing, did the CL63 get an engine downgrade? Didn't those used to be like 600 hp?

Well, Wall Street Journal is certainly not a car magazine. CL63 is 5.5L V8 TT (526HP/590TQ, with AMG Performance Pkg 563HP/664TQ), while C63 is 6.3L NA. So, they got it wrong about CL63. CLS63, though, is the same engine (6.3L NA) as C63.

I guess they got the info about CL63 from Wikipedia. (lol) Wikipedia CL class page has wrong (or outdated, as it looks like it works for previous gen CL) table about CL model number and engine info.

Love the look and I love the engine. I would be curious how it drives in comparison to the M3. That engine is certainly going to be a classic. Can't believe it doesn't come with an LSD as standard though...that is crazy.

Just curious, and not to take away from the badassery of the engine whatsoever, but isn't it technically a 6.2L? Seems like someone recently pointed that out, and the 6.3 name is for some other reason?

I don't like the current Mercedes styling at all, and no LSD? What the lol is that all about?

Meh/10.
