after installing XP on my PC, now everytime I turn on the machine, I get a screen that wants me to choose between (before the XP splash screen)

1. Windows XP Professional
2. WIndows XP Setup

with the default on the 2 Windows XP Setup and it starts to install XP all over again.

Is there a way to rid of the menu and automatically have it choose 1?

I seemed to remember in Linux, can edit the "grub"...

easy fix is once in windows xp go to start -> run -> msconfig click ok go to the boot.ini tab select the Windows XP Pro and click on set as default and set the time out to like 1 or 2 seconds.

the other way is to edit the boot.ini file itself on the c:\boot.ini it is a hidden and read only file so you will have to show all hidden files and then right click on boot.ini and remove the check beside read only. then you can double click it to open it and remove the windows xp setup line

I would still do the msconfig to set the default os its easier then doing it by manual editing. plus wont screw up if you miss type when manually editing

thanks but does not quite seem to work.

I tried your run-msconfig and only will not let me enter 1 or 2 but 3. When I reboot I still get the same menu but now default position of the cursor is on first line (does not go to XP Setup) so that is very helpful. Can this "menu" screen be deleted?

I also tried your second method but even with hidden files showing boot.ini is not in c:\ or c:\windows.

Ultimately I just want the menu screen be deleted.

Then go to the System Properties control panel, go to the "Advanced" tab, go to the "Startup and Recovery" section, and then the "System Startup" section at the top of this menu.

Select your "Default operating system" and then deselect the "Time to display list of operating systems".

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-or-
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
3. Under System Startup, click Edit and delete the offending line and reboot.

Thanks everyone. Got it all resolved. Appreciate everyone's input.
