New memory for SB build... help me decide

HumblePie

Lifer
Is there any difference between going with buying 4 separate modules of these...

4GB stick of GSkil ripjaw

versus

2 of these... 8GB (2x4GB) ripjaws

besides the price of course?

Also, is there any real difference between the older ripjaws and the new X series besides the price and new heatspreader look? If there is, is there a difference between the color's of the X series from red to blue to black? Or is it just pure vanity?

Because if they are really all the same, from a price perspective, I see no reason to spend some $350+ on some 16GB X series ripjaw "kit" when I can buy the same thing as 4 separate sticks for $200.

Haha, the Ripjaw X description on newegg says "Designed Specifically for Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs and P67 Platforms." What the heck does THAT mean?

I see no difference, except the Ripjaw X is trying to cash in on Sandy Bridge upgrades. Save yourself some cash and get the standard 2 x 4GB kits. I just bought those yesterday. I think its better than the 4 x 2GB kits since its not as stressful on the motherboard, and allows for higher overclocks etc. Besides, one day you might decide to go with 16GB, and you'll have the room to upgrade.

Oh yeah, don't forget about newegg's 15% off all RAM sale:

Doing a bit of research elsewhere, I came to the same conclusion. Just bought 4 of the 4GB sticks to give myself 16GB for my new build. Was $220 - $32 for $188 shipped for 16GB of memory. Which is way cheaper than any 16GB or even two 8GB kits together.

Nice! You did what I couldn't do for myself. I settled for 8GB since I could hear a thousand forum voices screaming "YOU DON'T NEED SIXTEENZZ!!1" I probably will upgrade to 16GB later if I find my virtual machines running slow.

FYI: Did you know that on this date last year, the same 2 x 4GB Rijpaw 1600 kit was a mind boggling $429? You just saved $670 by building a year later.
