How about a member title of "Banned Member" for those banned? Whenever someone gets banned, they can have a member title change. And if they're unbanned, they can have the special title removed and be moved back to their current status.

Yes? No?

I vote we ban the words "Hillary Duff" first. Then the unbanned title.

Would it? Would it cut down on Forum Issues threads about whether or not people are banned versus them just having posting issues? Maybe the "Banned Member" title could link to the thread that they got banned in?

I have seen other forums that have a "banned member" title for those who aren't welcome back. The idea of linking to the thread in which they were banned would most likely significantly increase complexity of the software, and if this happens at all, I would be almost certain that that wouldn't (and it doesn't matter to me anyway, seems like a not-terribly-useful feature - if you really have got to know, search with their username for the last few threads that they posted).

On banned vs. vacation, I thought that a vacation was a ban which the mods made a mental note for themselves to unban you x number of weeks later. So how would the software differentiate between bans and vacations?

I agree, that would probably be too much work for the mods. They try hard enough anyways. However if it could be implemented with software then it would be an interesting feature.

Okay, what am I missing here? If a member gets banned, he would not be able to post so we would never see a "banned member" title.

You would see it in their existing posts and when searching their profile.

If a flag can be set in the user DB indicating that the name is banned, a different(diferential) flag can be used for the vacation indicator.

Ah, I see. Okay. Mostly for the curious? I'd go along with that, although the number is probably very small.

why not just have a simple list of the members who are banned and when their banning ends?

Not a bad idea... Also, since weekly increments seem to be all the craze around here, maybe FT can be built to automatically unban people at designated times. I've been "forgotten" a few times. :p

Change their title

Banned for Life

Banned - 07/01/2004

The only problem is that when a forced vacation expires, someone is going to complain if it is not accomplished by the posted date.

I believe presently the Mods have to generate the parole and as we all now, they may not get around to it as fast as some obnoxious users would like.

If the date was displayed, the system should automatically generate the parole.

There should be a page that displays who is banned...

there should also be a feature for the mods to impose a set time limit for those to be banned... from 1 week up to a permanent vacation... and the system would automatically unban someone who's vacation expired.

Yeah but that was a bug. You could actually ban/unban people from that page, anyone with an account here could. It was never supposed to be exposed.
