New member- what clients should I run? lots'o'pcs

I've got PCs...lots of them. The top4 desktop machines get used fairly often. However the rest (some are disassembled) are not in use all the time (if at all). Should I even bother putting together the 486/386 machines? I am going to have to pick up some cheap power supplies for some of them as well as NICs and some old hub. I suspect the 486 and 386 machines should get Linux(ack! I am a Linux virgin!) if I should use them at all.

Speaking as a friend, I'd say the 386's aren't worth the power they will consume and cost you. Unless they are doing something else like being a server, only a fast 486 with MMX would be appropriate.

Now, if electricity is a "no cost" item to you, then go for it.

Having recently had my Linux cherry popped myself, I understand your trepidation.😀 We are here to help, though, and Kilowatt has developed a fabulous little single floppy distro for RC5 called Klinux that'll work just fine on the older stuff.

JonB,

Where would I find one of those?😉

Welcome aboard sinner! Always glad to have more machines powering TA. If you need any help getting your crack racks up, this is the place to ask! If you're looking for cheap used powersupplies, check out www.darncomputers.com. Power supplies are between $5 for AT and $7 for ATX. I've dealt with those guys on many occasions for old parts and they're very helpful.
As far as those 386/486 machines, the kilokey to kilowatt ratio might not make it worthwhile 🙂

Sorry, but that was just too funny. 😀
No offense intended though.

Well, to respond to your topic, what do you want to do with them? Seti, RC5, ogr, gamma. The choice is yours to decide which you like more.😉
After you decide that, we all will be more than happy to help ya.

All the D/C needs help right now😉

Oh baby, new member after new member after new member, what a treat.

this is going to be a very merry christmass indeed for TA 🙂

keep up the ass-laminating guys, and to all you new guys, welcome to the team and join us in our continuting recruitment efforts!

WoooooMoooooooo!

What team are you interested in? If it's SETI I'd chose the latest command line client (version 3.03). It's slower than the 3.0 client but we're all gonna have to switch soon anyway.

As far as the PC's. I wouldn't bother with anything below a P2. I've got one machine that's a P233MMX and when I switch to the 3.03 client I'm removing it.

If your in the UK ,I've got some AT PSU's you could have for just the shipping.I have 2 spare ,though I might rob the fan from 1 of them soon.

It depends on which project you want to run. If you want to run seti get v3.03 cli.

For RC5 or OGR someone else will have to tell you.

If you want to split between the projects I'd suggest running seti on the P3's since clock for clock they are the fastest cpu's around for doing seti (consumer cpu that is).

DanC,
No aliens? What about yourself?
Didn't you take a look at your selfportrait? Looks pretty alien to me! 😛😛

Sinner,
We can definitely use the power in the RC5 effort.
It seems our 1,6M boundary is still in place for about two months now. We can't get over it.
That has to be changed.

In the end, we have had lots of help [and still getting it] by the Seti team in the RC5 effort, thanks but it still not enough.
We will pay back our debts in the near future to our Seti friends.

c'mon Peter... don't spoil all the fun. 🙂

Of course paybacks...

We are however suffering the onslaught of the DPC NOW!
Forgive me for my impatience. So much cracking power devoted to other projects.
Mirabile Dictu...

Please just decide for yourself which is of the most interest to you. The stats are fun and all but if you have a genuine interest in the project your running you'll enjoy it more & will get more involved. Truthfully I hate it when someone asks this question because many times it causes tension between the different projects.

Now if you want to know which project is most effecient on which machines that is something that can be easily answered.

If you do want to run the 486's just use klinux. It's a stripped down version of linux with the RC5 client on it that fits on a floppy. All you have to do is boot from the floppy follow a few simple instructions and voila. You don't have to have a hd so this would help save some power making it a little more cost effecient to run them.

I wouldn't bother to run seti on the Pentiums either. I'd go Klinux here also.

As I said before the P3's would definetly be good for seti.

The Celery's & P2's I guess could go either way. They're ok for seti as well as RC5.

I'm sorry for leaving out GF & OGR but I'm not very familiar with which cpu does what with those projects.
