Hi,

I am in the process of building a new home and I would like to gather some knowledge and pick your brains about how best to set up my home network.

I would like to use wireless access points mounted to the ceiling because I feel this would be the best way to get a reliable wireless signal throughout the house. I have been doing some research and it seems as though the Unifi WAP's are pretty good. I'm open to suggestions, though. I am not a network admin, nor do I have more than a basic knowledge of how this stuff works. I'm just a gadget geek who likes to learn to do things for myself.

The house is 4300 sq. ft. and has a pretty open floor plan on the first floor and 4 bedrooms on the 2nd floor. It also has a covered porch that I would like to cover with the WAP's as well. I have plans that I can post, if you guys think it would be helpful. My plan is to mount all my networking equipment in a cabinet in the mudroom and run all the cables from there. With this in mind, how do you think I should begin to set up this network?

Thanks!

Well I do like the Ubiquiti UAPs, so that's a start in the right direction. Since you are starting from scratch I would recommend a switch that supports PoE for the UAPs, and Ubiquiti has solid choices there as well (note: UAP models support different PoE modes).

Thanks for the replies. Which version of this access point do you recommend? How many would I need for a home this size?
